For those interested in doing some shopping while visiting Ithaca, the city's downtown is home to Ithaca Commons, a two-block area full of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars which is accessible only to pedestrians.  The area was developed in the mid-1970's as an attempt to revitalize Ithaca's downtown and today the area serves as the main business district not only for Ithaca, but for its surrounding area.  Local government representatives have their offices there and it is also home to Ithaca's City Hall.  Many of the shops also have apartments located above them, which are considered to be desirable real estate.

The shopping area is dotted with small gardens and trees and serves as a community meeting place as well as a shopping center.  It is definitely the place to go to people watch!   Additionally, during the summer months Ithaca Commons also hosts a number of free music concerts from local and national acts which attract a large number of visitors.  See the Ithaca Commons website for a complete listing of stores and local events.
