A few quick tips for someone travelling to Helen for the first time:

 -  Whether you arrive in Helen for Oktoberfest, or any other time of year, be aware that White County is a dry county and that restaurants do not serve beer or wine with meals.  There are package stores in Helen.  If you wish to have a real German beer with your bratwurst and kraut, you must bring your own brown-bagged bottle into the restaurant with you.

 - If you are unfamiliar with German food prior to arriving, it may be a good idea to visit a site covering German cooking or dining to familiarize yourself with the titles of some of the dishes.  Don't be afraid of trying German cooking as it is very good!

 -  Numerous people have told us that the Helen police are very strict during Oktoberfest.  Either get a hotel within walking distance to the Festhalle, or have a designated driver.

 - Do not believe what the local travel pamphlets and internet sites tell you regarding hotels in the area.  There is (at least) one disreputable "Hotel-Resort" in the area that seems to survive by deceptive business practices...describing their property in glowing terms, charging up front, and then refusing refunds when confronted by a dissatisfied customer.  You can find more info in the Trip Advisor/Helen/Hotels /User Reviews section...but the main tip here is this:  When in Helen, do not get a room without looking at it first!

 - Be very careful if driving on the roads surrounding Helen at night!  It can be very dark, and the signage can be confusing if you don't know where you are going.
