The history of Mahdia is closely linked with Islamic religious history (see http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g29... ) for more information, and because of this, many of the attractions worth seeing in the area are old religious sites. More specifically, the old mosques of Mahdia are the places holding a majority of the history which might be of interest to travelers. The most well-known of these is the Central Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque, which dates back to the tenth century.
Visitors are reminded to be respectful of the fact that the mosque is not just any attraction but rather an important religious location. Dress should be less than casual and women should make attempts to cover themselves with more clothing than they might otherwise find appropriate during a summer vacation. Fridays are the most religious day of the Muslim week and visitors should avoid visiting mosques on that day.
Travelers who are more interested in formal exhibits detailing the history of their travel destinations will find that Mahdia’s archaeological museum is probably the best place for them. In addition to relating the Islamic history of Mahdia, exhibits at this museum share parts of the ancient Roman and early Christian influences on the past. Travelers should know that this museum stands almost directly next to another famous attraction in the area; the Skifa el-Kahla ( http://lexicorient.com/tunisia/mahdia... ).
