Both taxis and rental car are options for getting around while in New Delhi. Both have their distinct advantages and disadvantages over each other.
The most comfortable way to get around New Delhi is by taxi; however this is the most expensive option as well (assuming they are taken frequently). There are thousands of cabs operating in the city and are not hard to find. Rides can be pre-arranged in hotels or found on the city streets. Fares are determined by either meters or negotiation. If choosing to negotiate, make sure to agree on a price before beginning a trip. If a price cannot be agreed upon, take another taxi as there are plenty to choose from. One major problem with taking taxis is that many drivers do not speak English. To avoid any misunderstanding, make sure to carry around a map of the city with the desired destination distinctly marked.
The transportation option that provides the most freedom and flexibility is the rental car. For the first time driver in India, navigating the streets of New Delhi can be a hectic experience. Make sure to visit the Driving in India page before deciding to get behind the wheel of a car. There are many rental companies based in the city. A starter list, providing four companies displaying prices can be found at New Delhi Rentals.
