Expect hot, humid, tropical weather in Colombo all year long, ranging anywhere from 70 degrees Fahrenheit, up into the 90s. Relative humidity ranges from about 70% during the day up to 90% at night. Heavy rain storms are common during monsoon season, primarily from May through August, but also from October through January. You can expect an average of 14 inches of rain in May, and another 14 inches in October. Dry weather and bright, sunny skies are more likely from February through April, which is when most travelers visit this area.
That being said, rain is neither contstant nor guaranteed during the monsoon season. If you choose to visit during this time there is a possibility that the weather will hold out, and you are sure to see fewer crowds and less expensive accommodations.
Keep in mind that Colombo gets pretty crowded in mid-May, when hordes of Sri Lankans flock here to celebrate the Buddha’s Birth. Lively festivals go on all week, with impressive decorations, delicious treats, and all kinds of entertainmnet. If you plan to join the party, book your accommodations way in advance.
