New York being a city of diversity filled with choices carries over this aspect to the variety in accommodations. Many well known hotels have very high rates, and many budgeters find some difficulty if not great difficulty in finding accommodations on a budget without sacrificing service or at least a minimum degree of quality. Especially when you are working on a limited budget.

However, New York being diverse it offers budget accommodations with the simple requirements of safety, good service and least to say “non bank breaking rates.” They can be Bed and Breakfasts, Inns, Guesthouses that are owned by families and couples. Not listed below, but always an option, are hostels- perfect for students or younger travelers; difficult for couples, families.

The reason why many of these places get constant good reviews with little or few problems is because of its person-ability. At many of these places the owner/s check you in and make you feel comfortable. Problems and issues that arise at these accommodations can be addressed within a timely fashion. This is because most of the time it does not have long lines of communications.

Unless you are planning a trip at least 2 months in advance do not expect to get accommodations today for tomorrow or within that close proximity at these budget accommodations. This is due to the fact that many times these places are the first to be booked in New York . Most of these places do not have over 20 rooms/apartments/studios. So they are booked fast and often far in advance , deposits and cancellation fees are heavy, due the fact of their demand. But, do not hesitate to make a try because cancellations and openings are not unheard of especially in the winter season.

Keep in mind that location is not as it seems. For example staying around 122nd street in Manhattan allows for a short ride by subway to midtown Manhattan . So many guests only really need a place to sleep. Not having accommodations in midtown Manhattan is not an issue.

Let’s face it, this city; once you are out and about you only go back to your hotel at the end of the evening . Especially for younger folks who do not have family obligations. The only request is close transport, because anywhere in New York is easily reachable/accessible the majority of the time.

Many of these accommodations offer larger rooms than some hotels and can hold more individuals comfortably than a hotel. Remember there is nothing against staying at a hotel, but this is just to inform individuals on a budget that there are places out there. However, don’t be surprise if these places only take cash or travelers cheques for payment. This is because they are too small to accept Credit Cards. Accepting credit cards means they will have to raise their rates accordingly to accommodate the fees involved; reducing the aspect of it being a budget accommodation.

As with any establishment there is a chance that problems will arise, but that is with life. It is difficult to find accommodations in New York where there will not be some degree of bad reviews. You cannot please everyone. At least by the list below you know that many times your issues will be handled to a fulfilling manner. This B&B has great reviews and is located between the two largest ski resorts in the Catskill Mountains in Windham, NY.  The owners are young and energetic and attend to any need while making you feel at home.  The breakfast are a hearty country style, which is perfect before a long day of skiing, hiking, golfing, biking or any other of the many activities the Catskills have to offer.

This guesthouse has great reviews. The owners are very educated and this couple knows how to treat each guest with high regard. Rooms are decorated in a traditional Bed & Breakfast Style. They have very strict policies – but for good reasons. Many guests have nothing but good things to say about this establishment.

Along with great reviews; we have a saying in this type of business; that Bed and Breakfasts, Inns, Guesthouses, should be decorated to accommodate a visitor not the innkeeper – and this truly plays to the tune. Simply, clean and affordable. The innkeepers are a lovely couple, always ready to help and assist. The area is very safe and enjoyable. Location: West 81 st Street (very safe)
