Stratford-upon-Avon is perhaps one of the best places to experience the performing arts at its best. The birthplace of William Shakespeare, it's no wonder that theaters abound and stage performances of all kinds can be seen year-round.
The Royal Shakespeare Company , founded by Peter Hall in 1960, puts on a number of plays throughout the year and is known for its exceptional cast and crew. During the transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, both it (known as The Main House) and the Swan Theatre next door are closed for renovation. Instead the RSC presents a wide range of works in its temporary space, The Courtyard Theatre. This 1,040 seater auditorium is based on the Renaissance model, with a thrust stage allowing the audience to be seated along three sides.
The Bird of Prey Theatre Company and Falcon Productions also present a good variety of contemporary plays and theatrical works.
For musical performances, check with the Stratford-upon-Avon Civic hall or the world-renowned Orchestra of the Swan, which has a regular season from October to June.
There are also several travel companies that offer theatre packages for Stratford-upon-Avon, which usually include accommodations, meals, and at least one theatre event.
