I've been to London Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Singapore Zoo and now Australia Zoo, which definitely ranks up there as one of the best zoos in the world. It's not only good because of Steve Irwin it's a great zoo with a collection of animals I've never seen anywhere else, with great demonstrations and also an important message of conservation which is lost at many other zoos.
So yeah, Australia Zoo was probably the attraction I wanted to see most when in Australia, and was the main reason I went to Brisbane as you can get a dedicated coach from there to the zoo, with hotel pickup. This calling was mainly due to Steve Irwin but I was extremely impressed overall with the zoo, the animals and the way everything is organised.
The transport to the zoo was efficient. There was hotel pickup which transported you to a location that intercepted with the Croc Express - a dedicated coach that travels up from the Gold Coast every day to the zoo. It was already waiting for us when we arrived, and it dropped us right at the entrance of the zoo.
The zoo has a nice selection of animals that, being from Europe, I've never seen before including Echidnas (which were lovely), Tasmanian Devils, Dingos and many other things. Of course there's the crocs - you can't miss those, in addition to elephants, cheetahs, kangaroos, koalas, emus, tigers.... the list goes on and on.
There are a few things you can't miss when at the zoo
1) See a croc show in the crocoseum - you would be missing out on so much. They still get up close and personal even without steve
2) Go to the top level of the crocoseum after the show (or during the second show) and then all the way to the far end, away from the screen. Here you can see all of the crocs that Steve mentioned in his show.
3) Look under the crocoseum, at that far end. When I was there it contained a memorial to Steve Irwin including photos, khaki shirts with messages from family and friends and much more. It's a really moving place.
4) Feed the elephants. It's free and you really get up close with these creatures. They're lovely.
5) During the day the cheetahs were being led around the track where the shuttle goes. You could ask questions etc. Good photo opportunity where the shuttle through the park stops, but more crowded.
6) Go to a tiger show - only one i've ever seen and it's amazing.
Other highlights include petting the Koalas, walking through the kangaroo / wallaby enclosures, the aviary walk and the snakes.
The food in the food court is quite nice and fairly priced. I had the lasagne which was VERY nice.
To round off - if you're in Brisbane or along the Gold / Sunshine coasts then you need to spend the day at Australia Zoo. Not just because it was Steve's Zoo but it's a great place to spend the day. Check the website though - it can get VERY crowded on the special themed days apparently. Make sure you get there early in the day anyway - as you will easily spend all day here, and you may miss things if you get there late!
