We stayed for three nights at the Iberostar. We booked the Maya because the Lindo was full, and we were desperate to leave the Shangri-la Caribe down in Playa del Carmen (we switched after one night). I had done so much research on this place, but then opted for something smaller, and now I know that I did indeed want something smaller. This place is so huge, and you have to work to get down to the beachfront at the end of the property. We chose a section each day to be kind of a home base, and I felt like we had to pack for the day just to go out, because walking all the way back to our room was a big pain in the rear. The kids (3, 5, and 15) LOVED the pools and the ice cream bar, and I think they would want to go back here before anything else. But they would also probably like to live in Disneyland, and that's just not going to happen. In fact, I got the eerie sense of the monkeys running the zoo at a property like this, as the kids and the teenagers (and lots of merry partygoers) kind of ran the joint.
Our room was fine, but I could hear the thumping beat of the evening show as I went to sleep. Room service takes forever. Everyone's pretty nice, but the entrance to our building smelled like vomit, and I mentioned it to the concierge for our building one day, suggesting they perhaps replace the large outdoor mat that I thought was the culprit. She just smiled and insisted the smell was fresh paint. Dude, I've done a lot of painting in my time, and no paint smells like that!
For a family of 5 in two rooms, we paid $864 a day (they were nice enough, because I BEGGED, to give us Lindo prices because I explained we were already paying a huge cancellation fee at the other hotel to switch). We had spent 3 nights at the Ritz Carlton Cancun, which everyone says is SO expensive, and we averaged only a $250/day difference (the Ritz, also w/ adjoining rooms and 5 people, plus paying for taxis, meals, even the in-house doctor who had to come when my son got an ear infection, was about $1,100/day all told). And the Ritz was in such a different class! Beautiful room service, so clean and nice, such nice people, poolside service, outdoor cafe looking out over the water, pools wonderful and easy to get to, great air conditioning, movies on demand, etc. etc.
The buffet meals were okay, but you always felt like ... well, like you were at a buffet. Moo. I'd never done an all-inclusive before, and I don't think I want to again. I just don't need to feel like so much cattle, I don't need so much entertainment and music and dance lessons. I just like a nice property with good pools, good food, and a clean room. Also, the bottled water they provide here tasted like tap, and made me a little paranoid. (My husband and I both got a little stomach issue, but who knows what the cause was!)
Lastly, our flight didn't leave until 5:30 p.m., and they were nice enough to let us keep our bags by the bellman, get a last swim and lunch, and then use these shower facilities to change and get ready for our flight. It all seemed very civilized. BUT, the showers were in this dark room with no air conditioning and broken lights. It was repulsive, hot, and very difficult to manage with two small children. Yuck!
I will say again that my kids LOVED the pools, and they were very clean and well-maintained. The Japanese restaurant was good, just like a Benihana's and fun for the kids. The Italian wasn't as good, and the dinner buffet we had the first night (because it was too late to make reservations, another pain in the arse) was just okay. The ice cream was great everywhere, and the bartenders at the swim up bar were very nice. I never saw a single person waiting on anyone at the chairs, so I don't know if this happens. We caught part of a show one night, and it was pretty hilarious. I just couldn't escape the feeling that I was on a cruise ship, or spending three days at Hurricane Harbor! And I think $864/day is too much to pay for that kind of experience!
Oh, and they keep talking about these junior suites having a jacuzzi -- forgive me but I thought they meant a real jacuzzi. They mean a jacuzzi TUB in the bathroom, ha ha! So it goes!
