This resort use to be the VentaClub Gran Dominicus. It is located in Bayahibe, not in La Romana like Go Travel Direct is showing.
Overall the resort is good.
Great food. Nothing to say about it but very good.
The beach in front of the resort is nice. The sand is a bit brownish, nothing to compare with Cancun though., but that's what we were expecting. The cleanliness is correct. Animation is good too for the people who likes it (in Italian don't forget).
However, as all know, this resort was just sold to a Spanish guy. It used to belong to an Italian. Still, we saw one family who booked with Go Travel Direct and arrived with no .. room. They were sent to another resort for the night. By the end of the week, we met another couple who also lived the same thing. Mind you that the first one was sent to another resort for the whole week, a resort that they had never choosen. From our discussion with the representative, we were told that the hotel overbook. We realized that maybe we were lucky to get a room upon arrival. I don't understand why they were not given a room because lots of Italian were leaving the day after. When you look at the whole picture: No personnel speaking English of French at reception, all animation in Italian and so on, it is clear that North American people are SECOND CLASS TOURISTS. So something to think about. Is it going to change soon with the new owner ? Hope so... By the way, all Italians who arrived the next day had all a room !
So if you just want to relax on the beach and don't have to communicate with the staff, the place is perfect if you don't pay more than $ 1200.00/week CDN. Above this price, go somewhere else like Punta Cana.
For your info, the Italian guy who sold the resort bought the site next to The Gran «Dominicus for to build a brand new resort. The beach is horrible (lots of rocks) but I believe they clean the whole thing and dig. The resort plan look good too.
For Internet, you have only onee computer (try to find a place, always busy). Cost: $ 1 US/3 minutes. Thee computer is in a store and only accessible during business hours.
Rooms are clean as I said but not insulated. You hear everything beside. So if you are lucky, you will have a nice couple beside you who will go to bed at 23:00 hrs max and wake up not before 7:00 hrs. If you end up having kids beside (and there's lots of it on the resort), then you are in trouble for a week maybe. We met a couple who had so much problem likee this during the week that they were happy to end their vacation. And don't ask to change for another room, remerber, you are second class tourist if you are North American, the rooms are all booked for Italians. ( we tried ... come the next day and the next day is ... come the next day ...daw !)
Should you be away from the beach, you are finally lucky. At night, the volume of the shows is noisy should you want to go to bed early. By the way, there is no ocean view of facing there. Only inland 2 level buildings.
No bars on the beach nor in the pool. This situation will be corrected with the new resort they built.
Overall, this is a 3 star. It could have been a 4 but the comminication problem makes it a 3. Mind you that if you are Italian, that could become a 5 star suddenly.
Have a good time there (if you don't pay that much).
