After spending a relaxing week at the Grand Lido Braco in Montego Bay and an even better week at the Westin on Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman, we needed to spend one night back in Jamaica before our flight back to the US.
First problem arose when we arrived at the Ritz Carlton and found out they had cancelled our reservation due to our credit card not going through, although I had in my hand a confirmation email from them that we were booked.
I had received no email or any notification from the Ritz that there had been a problem with the booking. Luckily the resort was very quiet so we were able to get a room.
Due to our flight being delayed in Grand Cayman, we didn’t arrive at the hotel until midnight. I waited outside with our luggage for 15 minutes while my husband had to check in. No bellboy was ever sent to help me and so I loaded our luggage on the cart and pushed it inside myself, only then did the bell boy notice me but the job was already done. The young man on the front desk was useless; apart from not telling the bellboy to assist a guest checking in, the simplest of requests seemed to confuse him. We asked if there was free Internet in the room, which there wasn’t, it would cost us $12.95 a day for Internet. Since we were only going to be staying in the hotel for 9 hours (our flight left Jamaica at 11am) we found this an excessive charge as we were only going to use the Internet to check if our flight was on time or delayed the following morning. So, we asked the young man when we were checking in if he could please check with Air Jamaica. Air Jamaica had cancelled one flight completely and delayed another by 2 hours while on this trip, so we didn’t want to have to wake up at early if we didn’t have to. He said he could do it, but then he gave us the password and user name we needed to get the Internet access so we could do it ourselves. We thought this was very nice of him but checked before we went up to our room that this was going to be free, he looked at us blankly and then told us NO there would be a charge of $12.95 billed to our room. At this point being tired and irritable I nearly lost it, but my husband asked him again if he would please go use the computer behind the front desk and check with Air Jamaica for us. He slowly agreed and we asked that he call up to our room in 30 minutes so we knew before we went to sleep. After an hour still no phone call so we called front desk and he did it while my husband was on the phone….The service might be great during the day but the guy at the front desk after midnight was not playing with a full deck of cards if you know what I mean!
The room itself was very disappointing for a Ritz Carlton resort. There was a free standing refrigerator in our room (besides the mini bar one) but it looked about 10 years old and had three legs so nearly fell over when opened (there was nothing in it). The resort grounds were very nice and well maintained. I awoke in the morning to find two bloodstains on the sheets; since it was dark in the room when we went to sleep I did not notice them at first. They looked like old stains, but this was the last thing I expected to see in the morning. The Beach was not all that nice, very small amount of sandy beach and the rest was rocky. The beach at the Grand Lido was a lot nicer. I found it hard to believe that there was no tea/coffee making facilities in our room, but coffee was served in a room off the lobby between 7 and 9am. If you were a late riser you were out of luck getting a coffee.
All in all I would not recommend this hotel, you can stay at other nicer resorts for the same, if not cheaper room rate. We stayed at this hotel because we thought it was close the airport, but next time I would rather stay at the Holiday Inn, as I doubt it could be worse than this Ritz Carlton Hotel.
