We stayed at the Royal Decameron from July 4 thru July 9th. We had a great time! My husband and I and two daughters ages 10 and 6 went with a group of other families. We had 19 people in our group all together ranging in ages 6 to 60.
Before our trip, I read tripadvisor for weeks learning all I needed to know to make this trip the best it could be! Afterall, I would have an angry mob to deal with if things weren't smooth! With this website we were properly prepared!!
We went thru a travel agent to book our trip thru Apple Vacations. As promised our Apple vacations rep, Gabriel, was there to meet us. Just as this website had prepared us the timeshare vultures were there at the airport. It is set up to look like a hotel lobby and all of these timeshare men and women get in your face and insist you check in. I walked past saying no thanks and continued walking on. They get so persistent I found myself questioning if this was the right thing to do. We walked outside the airport and out there in his floral Apple vacations shirt was our guide! Don't be tricked by the timeshare vultures!!
We got to Royal Decameron and as we were checking in we were given a complimentary orange drink, nothing great, a lot like Tang with a pineapple wedge in a plastic red cup. This was cold and refreshing on a hot, humid day in Mexico, so we drank it up! We checked in with no problems, and we went to our room. It was a mess! We went back to the front desk, and they told us it would be 30 mins until it was ready for us. My husband, daughters and I went to the snack bar and ate some hot dogs and hamburgers and chips. We know we are in Mexico and realize this is the Mexican version of American food, afterall, I am sure Mexicans come to America and hate Taco Bell, right? So we eat our food, our last meal was in St Louis 11 hours prior to this, so even though it is not the best food we have ever eaten, we eat it and are glad to have something!!
So we were off to a rocky start, but get back to our room and our maid is leaving. I gave her a dollar bill and thanked her. She smiled and thanked me back. Each day, we left a note written in Spanish asking for 4 towels with a 5 dollar bill. Not only did we get 4 towels, we also got 4 water bottles daily. Our room was always very clean. We learned by tipping and taking your time to say Hola and Buenos Dias makes your trip much nicer. Just like anywhere else on the planet letting someone know they are appreciated means a lot. The staff at Royal Decameron works very hard to maintain a very clean room and grounds!! They all work very hard for very little!! Make sure you bring lots of small bills for tipping. Our last day we found we were out of small bills despite our being prepared! We didnt want to get stuck with a bunch of pesos as change, it is impossible to get change back in dollars, so we went to the atm to get small amounts of cash! No need for anything bigger than a 20!!
It is mentioned on this website that bringing an insulated mugs for drinks is recommended. It is priceless!! I also brought a bar of soap from home, our own shampoo and conditioner and some air freshener. I read on here the rooms were very musty. In block 3 we did not notice this, and the rest of our group in blocks 4 and 5 did not either. Also we heard the floor cleanser was smelly, ammonia based. I guess it didnt bother us, I brought the air freshener back home unused. One of the families we came with had probs with their air conditioning, but it was fixed no problem. Our room always stayed very comfy, no probs with the air!!
Before we left home I emailed the resort to let them know we were celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary and our youngest daughter's 6th birthday. Karla, guest relations, contacted us to find out how we can celebrate, it would require reservations at one of the restaurants. We already had reservations for Rodizio the next night, so she said she would take care of us there. Some of the other families we went with also had reservations there that night. They sent us a bottle of champagne at the restaurant. We had a fruit tray waiting for us when we returned to our room. After dinner, my daughter recieved an entire three layered cake that said "Happy Birthday" on it!! The entire wait staff sang Happy Birthday to her in Spanish and English. We had enough cake we shared with the other patrons at the restaurant! She was so surprised, she loved it!! We were all surprised we would get an entire cake!! I thought all of this was fabulous, I had read that the resort didnt do anything for special occasions, I just thought I would ask anyway! I am so glad we did!!
We weren't really bothered by the vendors on the beach. We knew to expect them, and we actually bought several little things. Make sure you barter, never give them what they ask. It was fun for us to chit chat with them and tease with them, they got to know our big group and they respected when we said no. No probs there, we werent rude to them, they werent rude to us!
We ended up booking an atv tour thru Trek Adventures. We were a little leary of it at first, but my husband and some of the other men in our group walked to their office in Bucerias to check it out. We ended up with 11 quads, 18 of us in our group went! There was another family with us! This was an absolute blast, we highly recommend it!! We went with them after my husband spoke with Oscar and gained confidence in him. We were told not to book anything unless we book thru Apple Vacations. Apple rep, Gabriel got word of this and treated us very poorly afterwards. We would have liked to have used him, but it was 85 USD per person instead of the 40 something USD per person we paid. Our tour was unbelievable!! Every tourist needs to come off the resort grounds and realize how wonderful our lives are! We started off in Bucerias, drove thru the residential areas of town, dirt streets, run down homes, women doing laundry in washtubs in the yard, kids playing soccer barefooted. It was amazing. Everyone of those wonderful Mexican people took a moment to stop and smile and wave! I am sure we were quite a site on all of those quads! Our tourguide, Felix was awesome!! We went through farmland, towns, jungle, up a river for a long time, up mountains. The scenery was amazing!! Life changing really!! We stopped in the mtns at a Tequila factory. Our group did very little tasting, our stomachs couldn't handle anymore Tequila. But the grounds were beautiful! Our group comes from the midwest and we all own our own quads, so we are really used to riding. These quads are semi automatic, so no clutch but you still have to shift. The shifting is a bit hard, and my quad had probs idling, it would die in neutral if not revved up. Also the auto start didnt work, so I would have to be pull started each time we stopped. No big deal, the experience was so awesome, it didnt matter! Just be prepared to get muddy and to drive like crazy, this wasnt a little put put down the road, we rode pretty hard in some places!!
The Coco Loco bar on the beach was great!! Armando and Mario are incredibly nice guys working really hard! The men in our group really bonded with them and are still talking about how nice they were! Also the friends our husbands made with the groups from Littleton, CO and Ohio. All good times!!
Overall, we had an incredible time! We knew we were going into a third world country and that we weren't staying at a 5 star resort going into this. The food was good, but not the best I've ever eaten, not the worst either. The service was amazing, everyone worked very hard to make sure our stay was very pleasant. The other patrons at the hotel are mostly Mexicans, Canadians, and Americans were third in popularity followed by Central Americans. Everyone is there to have a good time, we encountered some drunks, but nothing too out of line. The Mexican people are such good people, hard working, and so happy. We were so lucky to take this trip and fall in love with Mexico! The people, the beaches, the towns, all amazing!!
