After much research I finally chose the El San Juan for a 2 night get away from NYC. Most other hotels are random beach inns that would just be looking for trouble. Other mainstream hotels got to many mixed reviews. (Obviously the Intercontinental or Ritz certainly would be great options if you’re willing to pay.)
The El San Juan is esthetically gorgeous, the lobby is very well done and the rooms (in the main tower) are bright and comfy. The air conditioning def pumps out cold air so the blankets come in handy and add a cozy feeling. The tile floors did get cold though…and they could have been much cleaner. Housekeeping only goes over them with a Swiffer! The room was huge…2 Queen beds and a large sitting area. The beds were plush and comfy. Regarding bed bugs…I didn’t have an issue. I assume the few mosquito bites were from the pool and rainforest tour.
There are signs all over the lobby regarding attire after 7pm. It’s to keep the nightclub feel consistent. Great vibe if you’re looking to just hang out for a few drinks and listen to music. Be aware, drinks will cost ya plenty!
Look on the hotel website for specials. We got a midweek special, $150 a night. Which is very reasonable for this hotel and all of it’s amenities. Plus a $50 credit (would have been $75 if we stayed another night). The credit was put towards dinner at Koco’s which was delicious. All the hotel restaurants were over priced. (The Palm was pricier in the hotel than in NYC. The Ranch, a roof top restaurant, with a tex Mex theme was great…including the mechanical bull. A few menus with prices are on the website. The Breakfast Buffet was $26...no matter how good, Omelets should not cost that much!!! (go down the block to Edith's Café for great local food…it’s like a Puerto Rican diner in a shopping center with other fast food chains.) There’s also a major 24 hour supermarket, Pueblo’s, around the corner for anything you’ll need…they sell alcohol which I saw people bringing to the pool. (since those fun fruity looking daiquiris and mojitos are $10.50)
The pool(s) ARE the main attraction to this hotel. If you’re looking for R&R this is the spot!! You’ll need to get up early to get those fancy bed cabanas (by 8am or 6:30 during spring break!). Late comers will get a lounge or even pushed out to the beach! (HINT: Tip the pool staff to ensure a good spot – go down early and put a book/empty bag and towel and they’ll look out that no one moves it while you get breakfast and ready for the day!) The pools were clean and cleaned every morning with pumps. Security is also very tight! So no one will be wondering in from the public beach. Hotel guests get a colored bracelet.
Wave runners/Jet skies are $70 for 30 minutes. Not worth it.
I took a tour of the rain forest that the hotel set up. I wanted more of a hike but the guy at the desk really didn’t know much more than what was written in the book. They’re just there to make a reservation. But for $70 is was worth it since I didn’t have to worry about renting a car, directions, parking, etc.
The only real issue is that the hotel restaurants are very expensive with no other choices. The hotel was a $21 cab ride to Old San Juan. We would have rented a car but that’s an additional $16 a night to park at the hotel. It was only $12.50 from the airport…which is a 5 minute ride across the express way.
Next time, I’ll stay at El Convento in Old San Juan with better access to explore the island. If you’re looking for modern sexy hotel, some R&R at the pool and money is no issue for dinner…then you’ll love the El San Juan.
