We stayed here for a week in both inclement and sunny weather so can report on most aspects of the resort. Overall, if you are seeking the genuine Fiji (staff are from the local village), are happy to be remote from everything (no shops, no other resorts), are not seeking to make close friends while staying (you are seated seperately for meals) and are content to amuse yourself of a nighttime (there are no organised activities), and are willing to pay for luxury and service (room and food is not cheap), this resort is for you.
On the other hand, if you want to meet other people, engage in exciting day trips every day, have plenty of organised things to do when the weather is bad or want to visit other resorts during your stay, then there are better choices.
The bures are pure luxury and the staff are keen to please (they are grateful for the employment offered by the resort which has been open for only 2 years). The resort offers very reasonably priced daytrips to snorkelling spots, Fijian villages and to the limestone caves. It has to be said however that the range of distractions the resort can offer won't last more than 2 or 3 inclement days and a 3rd rainy day will leave you to your own devices for entertainment. There is no TV, no DVD and barely 2 crackly radio stations on the receiver provided in the bure.
Based on our experience, recommended day trips are to the caves and to Liku Liku snorkelling, as well as at least one village visit. The hike up the hill to the west of the resort is worth it for the elevated view of the resort and its surrounds.
While the resort is extremely nice, quiet, pristine, well appointed and stylish, here are some minor disadvantages which you may like to be aware of:
1. There is nothing to see snorkelling in the bay on which the resort is situated. While the water is crystal clear, there is no coral worth viewing. It is good for a swim at anything more than half tide.
2. There is good snorkelling near the caves and at Liku Liku (a daytrip 20 min boat ride away). Wherever you go snorkelling, make sure you get clear instructions from the Fijian boatman who takes you as to where the reef is and how you are going to tackle it (starting point, direction of swim and how back to the beach) as they do not always put in the effort to inform you of these details and instead just leave people to their own devices, which leads to missed opportunities at best and lost snorkellers at worst.
3. the resort has NO washing machine and NO drier. It is best to stay at the resort with no need to do laundry as the housekeeping staff will do it by hand (they will not let you do it yourself and who would want to by hand!) and it has to dry out on a line even if it is raining. You can go 2 to 3 days before your laundry comes back if it is raining.
4. Bring everything you need. the resort has some basic supplies but prices are very high (eg. FJD20 for small tube of toothpast)
5. Even the light food package is very expensive and if you are both light eaters (like wouldn't have 3 courses for dinner and only 1 course for lunch) then you may be better off paying a la carte.
6. Drinks are expensive (FJD4 plus tax for a small juice, FJD5 + tax for a coke or lemonade) so bring as much drink as you can with you. The fridge in the bure is of a reasonable size so you can keep it on tap cold. There are no tea or coffe-making facilities in the bure.
The above are only minor drawbacks in the context of the overall plushness and paradise setting of the resort so don't let these put you off.
Some tips to make your stay at Navutu Stars more enjoyable:
1. Try the lobster if it is served in the shell. That was delicious but the lobster served out of the shell was not nearly as nice
2. Don't take sunny days for granted. We had only (in May) 3 out of 7 days sunny. If it is sunny, do a water thing. Leave the non-water ativities for a cloudy day.
3. Make the effort to get to know the staff. They are very genuine and if you are lucky will personally take you to their village for a look-see (pick a cloudy day).
4. If you plan on visiting a village school, arrive at the resort with some gifts for the school and for the children. The people are poor by our standards (happy by theirs) and the smallest of gifts are greatly appreciated. Pens, crayons, textas, exercise books, text books, encyclopedias are all useful. Simple small toys are received joyously by the children.
5. If you have too much "stuff" at the end of your stay, give it away to the resort staff rather then leave it in your hotel room in Nadi. The families of the resort staff need it more than the workers in Nadi.
6. You are probably going to get bitten by sea lice if you snorkel with a shirt on. I don't know if cream exists to prevent this but if you can find one before you leave, use it.
7. When you go snokelling, take some pieces of bread with you and if you are lucky you will be surrouned by fish eating the bread out of your hand (or if you don't like that idea, crumble the bread in your hand and let it sink and you will soon have a carpet of fish beneath you).
8. When you go on a daytrip out in the boat (5m tinny), take something warm to wear as it can be cold in the windy open ocean and colder coming back in a wet costume. I can assure you it is possible to catch a bad cold in the overall warm Fijian climate.
9. Take some antiseptic cream with you to the resort if you plan to snorkel. Even the slightest graze on live coral will become very red raw and infected unless treated promptly with the antiseptic.
10. If you don't like geting into wet costumes, take 2 swimming costumes with you as often you will swim in the morning and then again in the afternoon and the morning's swimmers will not always be dry in a short time even if you hang them outside.
In summary, if you want to see the non-commercialised under-developed prisitne and genuine side of Fiji, and seek a relaxing rather than thrill-a-minute resort stay, Navutu Stars is for you.
