I travel to Honolulu several times a year on business. I chose this hotel after a pretty unpleasant experience at the Doubletree Alana. The Ala Moana looked about as nice and was significantly less expensive. Also, the location offers very easy accesss to the Ala Moana shopping center, Waikiki, and downtown.
Overall, I consider the Ala Moana a solid three star. It is moderately nice and clean for a very reasonable price. The lobby is quite nice and the front desk staff was helpful. The rooms are basic but sufficient. My room had a flat screen TV and a balcony overlooking the pool and sundeck. The ocean was just visible through the other buildings. Word of warning, however - the hotel is located just off of a very busy street and the noise makes the balcony less relaxing than you might expect.
As other people have mentioned, the restaurant situation leaves a lot to be desired. They do not offer room service, and the restaurant options are pretty limited. I came back from the mall at about 9:30 and there was nothing open except the high-end restaurant, which didn't fit with my jeans and sneakers attire. The mall is very convient though, and they have a large food court with lots of Asian options, as well as a few corporate sit down restaurants. There is a ramp connecting the hotel to the mall, so it is very easy to get back and forth.
The room was clean enough, but it wasn't great. I had tiny ants running around, a weird shiny splatter of something on the bathroom floor that stayed there my whole stay, and a few suspicious spots on the throw pillow. Nothing too horrible, but not the best.
Overall, the selling points for me were the location and the price. It would not be my choice for a vacation due to the lack of restaurants and beachfront, but it's not a bad choice for business or shopping.
