“Could Be A Great Hotel if They Tried A Little”

Hilton Palacio del Rio

3 of 5 stars
McLean, VA
Jun 26, 2008

I recently stayed at the Hilton Palacio del Rio for four nights on business.

On arrival, you notice that the hotel and lobby is very nice with a San Antonio original feel to it. The hotel itself is very beautiful for an older hotel. The hotel is right on the riverwalk downtown and you really couldn't ask for a better location. There are lots of things to do within walking distance. You can choose between self and valet parking, both of which are pricey so be prepared.

The rooms are very nice, larger then normal with a sofa and patio for all rooms. My room had a patio that overlooked the riverwalk and I love hotels that have balcony where you can get some fresh air and sit outside. The beds are very comfortable and they have some of the softest sheets and towels I have ever seen in a hotel. The rooms are well cleaned and maintained. The only downside to the rooms is the A/C which never really got the room very cold, something that is important to me

The fitness facility and pool are very nice with modern and clean equipment and plenty of it.

Ok here is where the wheels come off the wagon at this hotel, like it's stated in other reviews, the staff at this hotel really are horrible.

There are only two exceptions, housekeeping and the gift shop staff are top notch and wonderful.

The rest of the staff and management are absolutely some of the worst anywhere. No one smiles or says hello to you and you really get the feeling that you are an inconvenience to them. It started with my reservation which as a Diamond member at Hilton I dont expect much of a benefit but at least read my room preferences.

On check in the had me in a room that the opposite of everything I requested, low floor, double bed handicapped room, so apparently the reservation staff doesn't pay any attention to frequent travelers at all. The valet staff are just plain rude and hate people in general to the point it is almost funny. This is probably a reflection of really bad management here.

The second warning is stay away from the restaurant, it is hands down, the worst I have ever been in. The servers are horrible and the food isn't that much better. I ended up walking out before I was done because they were getting on my nerves so much. Fortunately there are plenty of restaurants around the hotel so you have lots of choices, keep away from the hotel ones.

It is a real shame about the staff because its the only thing keeping this hotel from being really nice. They are so bad that I probably wouldn't return to the hotel next time I am in town so I can't really recommend this hotel when there are several hotels nearby which are as nice as the Hilton with much better staff.

“Great location, building better than room”

Hilton Palacio del Rio

Jun 24, 2008

The hotel was nice, but the rooms were a little dated and musty. I enjoyed being on the riverwalk, but there are better hotels in town for a better value (Drury(s)).

The staff was friendly, and the main entries are extremely nice. The rooms just need some refreshing.

I did get it on Priceline because it was a busy time and many hotles were full when I was there so this hotel was probably the best for the price (~$110/night)

No breakfast and had to pay for internet, not the best for a business traveler.

“Boutique hotel feeling with all the amenities!”

Hilton Palacio del Rio

Jun 20, 2008

The hotel has the feel of a boutique property, but is a full-service and great service hotel.

The location, for conventioneers, is perfect. You walk out the front door, cross the street and you are at the convention center.

Our room was on the 8th floor on the riverside. Since this is the 'quieter' section of the Riverwalk, we did not have the noise we experienced in a previous visit to the Hyatt on the Riverwalk.

Good points:
1)You can walk to dozens of restaurants.
2) Front desk and bell service were professional, cordial, and efficient.
3) Decor in the lobby and meeting space has a true Southwestern look. Beautiful.
4) Room service was efficient and the food quality was very good. It was a bit pricey, though.

Negative:
1) Parking costs are an outrage!

“expect better”

Hilton Palacio del Rio

Jun 13, 2008

we are hilton diamond and have come to expect a certain level of service from the hilton chain and this one was a let down in the following areas:
(1) upon getting out of the elevator to our room (18th floor) saw a woman with a dog on a leash (not a service dog but an obvious pet) walking down the hall and enter a room which was next to ours (adjoining). called the front desk to ask if dogs are permitted and told "no pets are allowed in the hotel" explained one was in the room adjoining ours and were told to hold on and than "oh we made an exception for them" told them this was unacceptable for us and requested another room away from the dog, with the same amenities as the room we were in (king, non-smoking river view) and after much discussion were given a room on the 16th floor-were told they would bring the keys up so we could move-took 2 phone calls and 35 minutes for the bellman to get us our new room keys
(2) pool is outside on the 5th floor and filthy. water had stuff floating in it, beer cans everywhere (including the water), dirty towels piled up three feet high against a wall-would not even attempt it no matter how hot it was-yuck
(3) valet is $35/day. you must give them at least 30 minutes to get your car as it is off site parking and they are slow even on good days but at check out we called to get our car and went down 15 minutes later, no car. other people were walking up to the valet and their cars were coming. spoke to the valet and were told "it's on the way" after over 35 minutes he got on the phone and said "they can't find the car" we called the general manager directly and the car was "found" immediately after that and we were credited both days of valet parking but even w/o the lost car hassle the valet is frustrating, slow and expensive

but...there are good things about the hotel

(1) wonderful room with balconey overlooking the riverwalk and the city
(2) location, location, location take the elevator to the riverwalk floor and you are there in the heart of it all--walk to everything

“Good stay at Palacio del Rio”

Hilton Palacio del Rio

4 of 5 stars
Chicago, IL
May 15, 2008

I was in San Antonio for a weeklong certification class and decided to splurge on a room at the Hilton Palacio del Rio. I was happy with my choice.

My room was very nice. The bed was extremely comfortable and the sheets and comforter were of high quality. I think all the rooms at this hotel have a balcony, and I used and enjoyed mine a lot. I did a lot of studying on the chairs and table out there. It was kind of high up (19th floor) so might be a bit unsettling if you're afraid of heights. I had a view towards RiverCenter Mall, the Tower of the Americas, Alamodome, Hemisfair Park, the brand new Grand Hyatt, and beyond.

My only room complaint was that the bathroom was tiny.

All of the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful. I ordered room service once and it was speedy and delicious (albeit expensive).

I was disappointed in the pool on the fifth floor. The water was freezing because the hotel building blocks the sunlight for most of the day.

The location was great - right on the River Walk, next to La Villita, across from Hemisfair Park and the convention center, walking distance to everything downtown.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Balcony with nice view, comfortable bed, great RiverWalk location
    • Disliked — High price, crowded elevators
