“Fabulous Fourth of July at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort”

Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa

5 of 5 stars
Houston, Tx
Jul 9, 2008

I usually do not write reviews on tripadvisor. But after reading so many harsh reviews about this resort, I felt I had to write about our fantastic experience there.
I was there for three nights over the fourth of July weekend with my husband and seven year old son. The hotel was very busy. We did not check in until 10:30 pm. I was a little concerned because I had requested a room in a specific location and I have read many reviews from people who had a lot of trouble getting the correct rooms, and who also had trouble with the front desk staff. We found the front desk staff to be efficient and courteous. The correct room was waiting for us and our luggage was delivered immediately.
Our room was nice and even had an empty refridgerator. No mini bar.
Every day there were activities going on for the kids all day and evening. Starting early there were treasure hunts, sack races, hula hoop contests, pony rides, horse and carriage rides, movies, etc. There was always something to do if you wanted to participate. The pool is beautiful and the lazy river is fun. There were a lot of people but it never felt overly crowded. You could always find an inner tube to float on.
Although the hotel was full, the service by the pool was great. A The food was good and was delivered quickly.
People keep saying how expensive this hotel is. I do not agree. No nice resorts are inexpensive, I did not find the prices to be anything that out of line with other fine resorts. also, you are free to bring your own drinks, food, etc to the pool. Many people bring coolers from home, so you don't feel funny if you do. Every night there was a different type of buffet. It was $19.95 for adults and $9.95 for children. The food isn't great, but it's good, and that's a reasonable price.
The grounds are beautiful and immaculate. Even with all the people there, I never saw a full garbage can or trash on the ground.
I have been going to this hotel for about 13 years, but this was my first visit in two years. Some people are saying that this hotel is not what it used to be, but I thought it was better than ever.

“OK, but overpriced”

Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa

This resort has wonderful facilities - pools, a "lazy river" for tubing and a golf course on the property. Rooms are your standard Hyatt hotel room, but the beds, mattresses and linens seemed extra nice.

I did not try the golf this time, nor the "fine" dining in the Antlers restaurant, nor the spa treatments. The main restaurant is typical Hyatt - emphasis on overpriced, mediocre buffets for breakfast and dinner.

Poolside scene is a little chaotic - this place caters to families and if you don't like kids - stay away. They are everywhere!

Service is wonderful, everyone seems well-trained and attentive.

The long bar was pretty empty the nights I was there. It's quite a room, but very noisy and the few folks in there were drunk and loud. Yeeha!

The hotel is close to Sea World, but not close to downtown.

I guess if you have to take a vacation in San Antonio, this place would not be too bad, as long as you can deal with the price tags.

“Will be a long time before I return”

Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa

I have stayed at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort many times but after our most recent visit 6/23 - 6/25 (I checked out early!) It will be a long time before I return. I booked my hotel rooms through AmEx Platinum and called the hotel directly to verify that the rooms I needed were correct. I wanted a standard hotel room, and a suite with an adjoining room. Really not that hard to understand. When we arrived at the hotel about 5:50 (way past the 4:00pm check in time) I was told that the standard room had been upgraded to a suite but that some of the rooms were not ready. The bellman took our bags to the suite, and we headed to the lazy river. Returning to our first suite about 7:00 (never got a call from the front desk confirming if the 2nd suite was ready) I quickly discovered that there was a problem The adjoining room was occupied. I could not believe it! I thought well maybe my suite with the adjoining room is the one we were waiting on. Nope called down to the front desk only to be told that there were no available suites with adjoining rooms and we could have two king beds that would adjoin. I had talked to the hotel 3 times personally about needing a room for my sister, then a suite with adjoining room for myself and 3 sons ages 10,9 and 8. Manager assured me that they could fix problem next morning and offered a complementary breakfast (big deal plus with platinum card I get free breakfast). Long story short I never did get a suite with adjoining room, and had to get a 3rd room for our guest coming in for one night. It was just the most frustrating experience and I could not believe that everytime I went to discuss the issue the front desk looked at me like I was crazy. There are too many places to visit that I need to put up with such incompetence. Lazy river was very crowded with the convention crowd and the hotel just does not seem to have the same level of professionalism that was present in the past.

“Good Place For the Little Ones”

Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa

The resort is a fun getaway. Be prepared to pay $10 for a drink. Everything is expensive there and it is far away from a store. There were a lot of toddlers everywhere. I would say it is a good place for families with children up to 10 years of age. Most activities are geared towards them. It was a clean and safe hotel.

“Terrible”

Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa

I had the EXACT same experience as Longcut07. You could not hold a converstation with the front desk staff...they were incompetent. Our A/C did not work appropriately....it made this loud banging noise throughout the night..waking me up every time. I asked for it to be fixed several times. When I asked to change rooms, they told me that there was a big corporate conference they were trying to accomodate first.

All of the hot-tubs were not working and the poolside lounge chairs needed to be updated. They are the plastic ones that had worn out strips. There were no cushions to put on them either. It became very incomforable after around 30 minutes of reading a book. They were also short staffed and didn't have any service by the pool to get a drink or towel. I had to check towels out from the sportsclub.

I used to come to this place every year growing up during the 4th of July...it has definately gone downhill with the new management.
