We have stayed at the beautiful Watermark Hotel in San Antonio a couple of times. The first time was when we booked 3 nights at the La Mansion across the river and had a terrible experience all the way around - messed up/lost reservations, filthy, dusty room (not appropriate for our asthmatic child who was unfortunately ill at the time). They promptly moved us to this "sister" hotel and set us up with 2 connecting rooms. It was beyond lovely. Very spacious - the bathrooms were to die for. Being that our children took the double queen room in the corner of the hallway (adjacent to our King room), their bathroom was HUGE. We could have fit 4 people in the tub, alone - no need for the pool! Very elegant/conservative/comtemporary decor which was very calming. The beds are very comfortable - a big plus for a traveler who has back issues like myself. The location is fabulous. We have yet to get a river view, but no matter, the river is a step outside the door. A wonderful way to experience the very special River Walk is to dine at their signature restaurant, Pesca. We've dined there many times since the hotel opened and are NEVER disappointed. They even whipped up something for our finickiest eater (plain buttered pasta, fresh strawberries on the side) which seems silly, I know, but many restaurants would not bother with even such a simple task. Pesca has fantasitc, friendly service, a wonderful menu and wine list (not cheap, but so worth it!). It's a favorite place for us to celebrate a special occasion when in SA, even if we are staying out in the hill country. The conierge desk has never steered us wrong with dinner reservations outside the hotel as well. And if you are with your kids, there is a Johnny Rockets right next door. A favorite of our crew.
The second time we booked for a spa weekend for an anniversary trip. The spa was wonderful and relaxing and is quite beautiful. Our room, service and dinner reservations were as perfect as we expected and had experienced in the past.
This is not a place - nor are there really many on the River Walk - for a swimming pool type vacation. It is HOT in Texas in the summer and the small roof top pool can become quite warm. However, we still enjoyed it, with or without our children. There is pool side service from a small cafe next to the pool which has good food and drinks (good margaritas, etc). You will get excellent service for the price of what you would expect at a 4 or 5 star hotel. Also worth mentioning is the workout facility. Very nicely done and clean (empty-no other patrons around) with all updated equipment. We enjoyed this, as well. Book the Watermark if you find yourself in or near SA even for one night. You will truly enjoy the experience. We will definitely book it again - for one night or for several!
