“Mediocre”

Hampton Inn San Antonio Downtown (River Walk)

I have to say that the Hampton Inn - Riverwalk is one of the worst Hampton Inns I've stayed at, room-wise at least. As a Hilton HHonors elite VIP member, I stay mostly at Hamptons and Hiltons, and Hampton is definitley my favorite sub-brand, offering what I feel is the best combo of features & price.

I'll start with the positives:
+ Check-in was super fast and the clerk was very professional & nice
+ There was plenty of parking, even during the busy Memorial day weekend
+ The bed, as in all Hampton Inns, was amazing and gave a great night's sleep

Unfortunately, there were more negatives than I've come to expect from Hampton Inns:
- Room was shabby, with holes in carpet and stains on the old vanity in bathroom
-A/C was extremely loud and clunky when the compressor switched on
-Poor lighting in the bathroom
-Breakfast was not that well-run - popular items kept running out and they had a hard time keeping up (even with the breakfast room 1/2 full)

For $160 paid per night, I expect more. This property can't compare to other Hampton Inns I've experienced for less money. I have to say, though, that my standards for Hamptons are very high based on past stays. If you happen to be staying here, most likely you won't hate it; however, mediocre is the name of the game.

“I better than average Hampton”

Hampton Inn San Antonio Downtown (River Walk)

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the Riverwalk and about 5 minutes to the Alamo. For business, I thought this place worked great since it is away from the crowds, conventions, and the noise of the Riverwalk area, but still convenient to them. The breakfast was good every morning with enough variety but obviously not made to order (Its a Hampton not an Embassy). Parking is free and its easy to get on and off the Interstate. Bathrooms were clean, beds were comfortable, and room was made up well everyday. I'll stay again!

I did have a couple complaints though. The biggest issue I had was that they had really low office chairs in the room that made the regular desk difficult to use. I asked for a regular height one, but they didn't have any. No problem though, they have a short work table as well that ended up working out fine as a desk. I also found they never prepared the Breakfast-to-go bags like most Hamptons do. I had to ask for one every morning. Last recommendation would be to try and stay on the non-Freeway side. Not sure what the Freeway side would be like.

“It was great!”

We were here with a 4th grade field trip. This hotel had a great location, though not on the riverwalk, but that was okay. We were there to see the Alamo. Everything was in walking distance and you can see the Alamo walls from the hotel. The hotel was clean and comfortable. The beds were great. The bathroom sink vanity was totally different and I loved it, I've never seen that before. I loved the shelving it offered in order to put your bathroom things. Breakfast was great and plentiful. The eating area is very spacious. I would definetly stay here again! God Bless You, Sherrill Hooker

“Good Choice”

Hampton Inn San Antonio Downtown (River Walk)

This hotel is larger and slightly more upscale than most Hampton Inns (slightly) and offers all the usual ammenities of the chain. No problems.
But the best feature is the location. The Alamo is within sight of the front door, and an easy walk. You'll wish it was about a block closer to the Riverwalk, and that there were some closer restaurants, but then it would probably cost another $75 a day.
To me, this hotel offers the kind of compromise between price and location that I'm always looking for.

“Outstanding experience”

Hampton Inn San Antonio Downtown (River Walk)

We spent a morning looking at almost all the RiverWalk hotels and then chose this one which is not really on the River Walk but is very close to everything. We booked 3 nights and were so pleased that we stayed an extra night.

We often stay at Hampton Inns, and we thought this was the best one we've tried. The staff was so friendly and kind. When I mentioned in conversation to the checkout clerk that we had an early flight, the next day, she gave us 2 boxed breakfasts even though we wouldn't be staying there the night before our flight. We saw a cleaning lady stop what she was doing and get other extra cleaning equipment to clean up a spill she saw in the elevator. When we needed a certain size of cardboard box to pack something, the staff found one for us.

Other reviewers have mentioned noise, but we didn't hear any. We thought everything was perfect: bright and clean, comfortable beds, good breakfast, etc. Parking is free, a rarity in downtown San Antonio.

You can sightsee without using your car. The location is only a couple of blocks from the beginning of the RiverWalk boat tours (which is inside the River City Mall.) The Hampton is equally close to the Alamo and to the trolley tours which depart from Alamo Plaza.
