A nice, comfortable place in a good location to stash your stuff as you explore downtown San Antonio on foot. The pool on the roof was an unexpected bonus - the pool is tiny, but the roof view of the sunset was great. The restaurants on the river are a short two blocks away if you stay at street level. They are a longer, slower walk (but much more scenic) if you keep to the river. As far as Riverwalk hotels go, this is on the edge of the action but that may be a good thing seeing how crowded the Riverwalk can get.
The hotel is in a National Register building that was originally an office. That creates the quirks that some may find charming and others annoying. The floor layout is a little confusing. The elevator only has two slow shafts for both guests and staff. There is no on-site parking and the valet ($21/day for unlimited coming and going but not included in the hotel price) has to walk two blocks to get your car. The lobby, like all Homewoods, are built for breakfast and not much else. Still, the staff and valets were friendly and helpful and the suites clean and comfortable. If you want pampered luxury in a hotel you never have to leave - go next door. If you want a good place to park the car and the gear, with a comfortable suite to come back to at the end of the day, then this is the place.
