We decided on San Antonio for our family's Spring Break vacation, and needed a hotel room that was big enough for 5 of us to sleep comfortably ; Homewood Suites was one of the few places with rooms large enough. In retrospect, we should have gone elsewhere and booked two rooms....
While the room was indeed big enough, that's where anything good about the hotel ended. The room was very poorly maintained- THICK dust on the lamps in the bathroom and other places, a hallway electrical outlet cover was broken (exposing a loose outlet which was an eletrical hazard), the sliding closet doors in the master bedroom were broken (falling off tracks, edges of mirror glass door exposed), the tub faucet dripped constantly. It took 3 days (out of a 5-day stay) for the hotel to fix the outlet and closet doors. The faucet did not get fixed.
Carpet in the room was well worn in places; stains on the wallpaper covered the wall next to the main room table.
The breakfast that's available is fair (at best), but much too small for the size of hotel this is (only *2* waffle makers? Come on...). Many people opted to bring breakfast back to their rooms (see tables item below), but the hotel always ran out of trays in the first 30 minutes which made carrying anything a bit difficult.... Lots of the bread items (danish, etc) were not replinished after the first hour, even though breakfast is supposed to last 2 hours. There were not nearly enough tables for people to eat at, so you had to either stand around waiting for a table, or try to balanace plates and bowls to get food to your room after giving up waiting.
While the location of the pool (rooftop) was kind of nifty- there were never any towels for the guests (I had to call the front desk EVERY time we went swimming), and the pool and hot tub are far too small. Kiddie-pool size at best.
Room televisions were ancient by today's hotel standards.
Lastly- for a hotel that is "on" the RiverWalk (which you pay dearly for in San Antonio), the only thing adjacent to the riverwalk is the 1st floor dining room, one floor ABOVE the riverwalk. To exit the hotel and get to the river, you have to go out a side door, around the hotel, and then down the bridge steps. Phrased differently, while most all other hotels have fancy restaurants and bars (patios) and lobbies and such *on* the riverwalk (exit hotel- you're there), the Homewood Suites has nothing except a big black wall.
And on top of all this, we had to pay $20 a day for parking. Ouch. For what this hotel charges, parking should be included.
If you need an "extended stay" type of room, this hotel may have what you need; we did use the full size fridge for snacks which was helkpful. The kitchen has a small stovetop, but only dishes for 4 people (even though our room slept 5 or 6). If you want up-to-date amenities and something that's decently clean- I'd recommend you go elsewhere.
When we checked out, we were given a one-day discount off our 5-day stay after we complained about all the above. (When you're paying three-hundred-plus a night, you should get better..).
While I would not rate this hotel as "Terrible", I cannot do better than one notch above that - this place has some serious updating and cleaning and service enhancements to do. I would not go back there again if we went back to this city.
