We got this room for $122 a night through Hotwire. It was a decent deal overall, but I would probably book with a different hotel next time.

The staff (from valet to the front desk) is extremely welcoming and personable. Parking is expensive ($24 a night) and probably available within a short walk for much less. The lobby has a lot of old world charm, but it didn't translate well in the rooms. The room decor is up to date and the beds are comfortable, but the carpet was quite stained, there was mold under the drapes (I looked because I could smell something) and the bathroom was older (without becoming charming). The tub faucet was dripping when we arrived, but it was fixed quickly.

The location to the River Walk is great and breakfast on the sidewalk outside the bakery was a nice experience.

Nice place, good location, friendly staff -- HOWEVER, extremely noisy. This is an old hotel which has been re-modeled sometime recently, however the re-model did not include much noise insulation or new room doors. Basically, whenever anyone on your floor (to include the service staff) closes a door it slams shut -- sounds like a shot gun going off starting at about 6:00AM. Additionally, the rooms are so poorly insulated a phone ringing in a adjacent room sounds like its in your room. VERY NOISY. Additionally, automobile parking is limited to valet only -- $22 per day -- don't waste your time -- nice parking garage is 1/2 a block north of the hotel. Lastly, the pool is a joke -- more like a large hot-tub (in desperate need of a re-model itself). Overall -- I will not stay here again.

We loved our stay!
I am a clean freak and refuse to stay anywhere that isn’t spotless and clean smelling, so this hotel was a great choice! The staff is very friendly and helpful…in the morning when I began to enjoy my comp. in room coffee (Starbucks brand!) I realized I needed more sugar & cream, called the front desk, and 2 mins. later had a sweet man at the door with a bag loaded with both! The beds were very comfortable, including the puffy comforter (sheets spotless and crisp!). The hotel décor was beautiful and historic, the rooms were almost soundproof as they had a Prom one night of our stay and we didn’t hear a peep.
I can’t comment on the dining because we ate on the riverwalk each night, but we did have breakfast one morning and really enjoyed the tacos and iced lattes, but were disappointed when we ordered the chocolate covered strawberries (after being told by a friend they were a ‘must’) and they ran out and said they didn’t plan on making more for a few days!
Overall it’s a great choice…next to the riverwalk, walking distance from everything (Alamo etc.), clean and good nights sleep!
The only cons: tiny closet, small bathroom, didn’t get to try the strawberries, and having to pay to park at the hotel each day.

We had a wonderful one-night stay at the Gunter to attend a musical at the Majestic Theater. The hotel is beautiful! Our room was unexpectedly huge and very clean and comfortable. The best thing for us was the location. It is right across the street from the Majestic Theater--we just walked across the street ten minutes before the show started. We can't wait to come back and stay at the Gunter every time we want to see a show!
