We stayed at the Hawthorn Inn and Suites and loved it. The employees were very courteous and helpful. I read one review about the pool being too small but it looked plenty big to me. It was probably bigger than the pool at most houses, We had a balcony overlooking the riverwalk and it was quite relaxing with the doors open. If you try to get the cheapest price on a room you will get what you pay for. The hotel may not be in the middle of the the riverwalk, but there is a watertaxi that will pick you up right at the hotel and let you out wherever you want to stop at so if you dont want to walk you have the option of using the water taxi. My husband cannot do much walking (5 back surgeries) so the water taxi really came in handy. We sat outside at night and did not feel that the area was bad. In fact when we arrived at 11 PM we took a walk around the area and was not the least bit threatened. In fact we saw a lot of tourists doing the same thing we were doing. It is a very nice walk along the river, It was very quiet and relaxing. I will tell all my friends to stay at the Hawthorn. We could not find a negative thing about the hotel.

“Definitely recommended, good value, spacious”

Hawthorn Inn & Suites - San Antonio Riverwalk

Feb 6, 2008

Overall a good value pleasant hotel. Maybe a mile from the centre, a 20 minute walk but the compensation is space. The rooms are large, clean and pleasant. Compared with the central crammed diminutive hotels. It's about 10 minutes taxi ride from/to the airport. Our two rooms overlooked the Riverwalk. A rather insignificant stream but bordered by trees and shrubs and gets more exciting towards the centre. Very pleasant views! We stayed for a week in December 2007 for a conference in the centre, so transport was provided. The area seems a little rough, like a disused car park, but not threatening. Just beside is the town's TV station and walking to town you pass the Greyhound bus station. The hotel entrance has a tree-lined courtyard. Very photogenic. Then the lobby leads into a large breakfast room (apparently Weekly free themed suppers for guests each Wednesday, but you need to ask as it's not well advertised).
The rooms were very large, with enormous beds. Clean, excellent, with nice showers/bathrooms. Excellent.
Breakfast -- included in the price-- was a basic but extensive buffet. fruit, juices, breads, cereals, yoghurts, toasts, waffles, eggs. As much as you can eat! The downside of the hotel is that food runs out when there are plenty of guests, and the bad attitude of kitchen staff who appeared to resent any requests, such as for hot water! I think the only problems we had were reception staff forgetting on three occasions to order a taxi and the bad attitude of kitchen/breakfast staff. Overall, good value and I'd definitely stay again.

“Not Likely to stay here again”

Hawthorn Inn & Suites - San Antonio Riverwalk

We travel extensively for business and pleasure. We've stayed all over the world. With that said, here we go. Front desk staff-indifferent. Customer service does not exist.

You'll even have to call your own cab (I have the phone number memorized [-------] and we were only there two days.) This is not a neighborhood to stroll in at night.

I had to use my cellphone to make all calls, including the front desk because the phone in the room did not work--Even though it was reported, it was never repaired.

Proximity to Riverwalk-not close to anything you see when you do an internet search on the San Antonio Riverwalk. However, it is very close to the Greyhound Bus Station and comes with all the typical bus station "action and personalities".

They charge $10. to park in an unsecure open lot across the street from the hotel. We paid for four (4) nights and stayed two (2). I rest my case.

The nicest person we talked to at the hotel was the English Second Language maid.

I think we would rather stay in the northern suburbs off I-35 and drive down to the Riverwalk than to stay at this property.

If you can afford it, stay at the Watermark. It's the real deal, as represented and on the Riverwalk. Great Spa too.

As mentioned we have travelled the world. We've stayed at 5 star hotels and we've stayed in hotels where they give you your room key and a can of bug spray. When we stayed at the hotel and got the room key with bug spray, we knew what we were getting into. At Hawthorn Suites Riverwalk we had much higher expectations and they failed to deliver in any way.

The shower was good, Bedspread was gross. Bedding was ok, sheet was torn.Bad pillows-bring your own. Internet access works sometimes-signal comes and goes. The front desk gives you the phone number of the ISP tech support , so, it is quite clear that it is not their problem.

I know, you want to know where we got the room key and bug spray--Australian Outback-we are honorary "Bushies".

“Good alternative to high priced Riverwalk locations”

Hawthorn Inn & Suites - San Antonio Riverwalk

Great special rate from Expedia. Nicely renovated Hawthorn Suites. Not much in the immediate area - about 5 blocks to the main part of Riverwalk (Note: they say on Riverwalk, but its an undeveloped section). Good deal for the price.

“The Hawthorn was very good”

I stayed in San Antonio for 4 nights, and booked the Hawthorn Riverwalk hotel. I must admit that I liked it very much. The rooms are spacious (here I must contradict one of the other recent reviewers), big bed, one small seat, one large seat, table with chairs, a television, a refrigerator and even a small microwave. The bathroom was large, with an easy shower cabin. Breakfast was allright (allthough there was hardly any variation), the rooms were cleaned to my satisfaction, and the hotel staff was friendly. As mentioned elsewhere the pool of the hotel is very small, but to cool off it seemed sufficient (I did not use it myself). The business center, with its two pc's, were very convenient. The location is not in the center of downtown, but it takes just a very short walk to reach the very center of San Antonio, so that cannot really be called a disadvantage of this hotel. Also convenient is the fact that the bus to the airport (line 5) has a stop just outside the hotel. It runs every half hour to the airport and back.
