“Good deal if a little remote.”

Residence Inn San Antonio Downtown/Alamo Plaza

Needed a 2 BR/2 BA suite (rather than 2 rooms) and the Residence Inns were the only providers in SA downtown, and also the very best deal. After reading of the parking horrors here, we chose NOT to rent a car, so we needed to be pretty centrally-located for a wedding in the church at La Villita, then the reception at La Mansion del Rio, as well as touring the downtown sights. We're used to walking a lot but location was a bit distant, even for us, in temps in the upper 90's.

Hotel itself is pleasant, very clean. Breakfast was more than ample, in my opinion. Rooms were kept very clean and were adequate for our needs but they are beginning to show a little bit of wear. Promptness of elevator service was good enough to deserve comment.

Staff was extremely helpful and friendly, especially front desk crew where ROGER was a stand-out. They gave directions and called for taxi service for us eagerly and quickly on a few occasions.

As noted by others, the hotel is in a pretty remote area but I was not afraid of returning to the hotel at night. I did hear the railroad horns mentioned by other posters, but my sleep was not disturbed by them or by the close-by highway. The windows seal out the noise rather well, I thought.

The Alamo is close; Rivercenter Mall is too, but plan on taking a taxi or streetcar ($1 in coin or bills per adult per ride) at Alamo Plaza to King William area, Market Square, La Villita, Hemisfair Park and the further reaches of Riverwalk.

“Memorial Day 2008”

Residence Inn San Antonio Downtown/Alamo Plaza

Memorial Day 2008 was our first visit to San Antonio. We flew in on Saturday morning and out Monday afternoon. Originally ,we were scheduled to come in February and were booked for the Riverwalk Marriott--via points. When I rebooked flight and accomodations, I was told by Marriott and Hilton that points could not be used on holiday weekends. Thus, we moved one block off Riverwalk and saved money. We have stayed at several Residence Inns. This one is pretty average. We were on the 12th floor. Outside noise level in the room was zero. The air conditioner was great!! It kept the room very cool--well, cold really! The room and facilities were very clean. The front desk and other hotel staff were friendly and eager to help if needed.
Breakfast was ok. We have had better selections at other Residence Inns. It was crowded by 8:30 each morning. In fact, I brought my food back to the room both mornings. The pool area is extremely small. We felt the price was somewhat on the high end for this hotel. But we were aware that we were paying for location. It was very easy to walk over to Riverwalk, Alamo, and on down to the Market Square. We did not ride the bus or trolley. We ate at Mi Tierra's in the Market Square Saturday and Sunday night. It was recommended to us by friends and we are passing on the recommendation to others traveling to SA.
This is a great place to stay if you are traveling with children. It is nice to be able to sit on a sofa to visit instead of a bed. By the way, the bed, sofa and reading chair were all comfortable.
Stay a block off the Riverwalk and use the saved money for other things.

“Great Management”

We stayed here over the Memorial Day Weekend. We picked the Resident Inn becaue we were traveling with 4 teenagers. We used a combination of points and paying. We were upgraded to a two bedroom suite, which is perfect with kids. The room was ok, nothing fancy, but clean and lots of room. We were on the top floor, nothing special about the view, and elevators ran fast.

Breafast is always a nice touch, I did not find it crowded as I am an early riser. There was always a place to sit. We went to Sea World one day.....very easy to get to, go early as it does get crowded but we were able to ride everything and see all the shows with no problems.

Tubing on the Guadalupe another day, about a 45 minute drive, but so worth it. I forgot how much fun it its. Lots of drunk people so not for the very young.

Short walk to the river walk and mall. I found it easier to stay up on the street to get to some locations to eat like the Hard Rock, but a stroll along the river walk on the way back is nice.

Also took the trolley to a Mexican Restaurant in the Market Area, worked out perfect as did not have to worry about drinking margaritas and driving.

The dance club next door did have some of the most interesting characters......kinda fun to people watch as some of the outfits they were wearing were rather flimsey. It did make me uncomfortable when my teenagers were walking alone back from the riverwalk. I made sure they called and I went out to watch for them....thus the people watching.

Overall a great location, management very helpful.

“This really happened.....”

We were visiting friends in Austin, decided to go to San Antonio for 2 days over Easter weekend. Only thing we could find was this hotel. When I got there, I was pleasantly surprised. They let us check in 2 hours early (we have a young child so this was helpful) and the room was large, clean, pretty new. It has a kitchen which is great with a kid. Well at 4pm, our door started to open. My husband was just out of the shower and not dressed. I thought someone was breaking in, my husband was yelling and I couldn't see who it was. I then grabbed the door only to find 2 kids about 10 yrs old and there mother (who was wearing a headscarf:Muslim). I slammed the door shut when I realized they must have been given a key by reception. I called down there 3 times, it went to voicemail. On our way out to dinner we stopped by the desk,my husband asked them what the deal was. They were very apologetic and said they would comp our room and give us a bottle of wine. That was ok with us, but I can't imagine being that family who saw some random guy naked. If it had been my kids I would have been pretty upset. Remember the Alamo takes on a whole new meaning. Anyway, that tainted my experience of the hotel, as well as their strange policy: you can pay them $15 to park in the garage, but if you leave and come back and it's full, then they will refund your money. Huh? There is a parking lot at the end of the block that is cheaper, so you may as well just park there rather than have to drive up and down to see if there is a space that you paid for. The breakfast was ok, pretty chaotic on a crowded morning. Thankfully it was free for us, otherwise $199 was way too much. If you can get it cheaper, hey take a chance.
