“Smaller than expected, but still nice to see”

My husband and I had lunch on the Riverwalk and exited right near Alamo plazo. I immediatly saw the very small building that is the Alamo. This portion is considered a shrine and had lots of info about the history. As well as a lot of flower wreaths- bad news for my allergies. There was a lovely garden area in the back, a nice place to sit and relax, out of the sun. The muesuem wing was essentially a gift shop, with a few historical points placed throughout (the Bowie knives and rifle display was neat!). Plenty of books available on Texas and the alamo, cookbooks, jewelry, trinkets, keychains, etc. Also lots of stuff for the kids. The Alamo was free, but the Daughters of the Revolution run it with no help from govt, so please plan to drop a dollar or 2 in one of the many donation bins!

It does not take much time to visit this sight but it is a must. Try to see the movie on the Alamo at the IMAX across the street in the RiverCenter Mall. It is very historically accurate and only 40 minutes long but will give you a great understanding of the events that occurred at the Alamo.

“best for those who enjoy history”

All exhibits associated with the Alamo were free of charge. I was shocked! They accept donations.

I visited the Alamo on the final four weekend so I believe the crowds were a bit more than usual. We waited about 20 minutes to enter the shrine area (the main building that you see in your mind's eye when you think of the alamo). It is well maintained and beautiful on the inside with its chandeliers. The exhibits inside were informational and well done. I must admit, however, that I didn't even begin to read everything. The grounds outside the shrine are fantastically maintained. Be sure to grab the brochure that will take you on a self guided tour outside. We also watched a video that was approximately 15 minutes that was produced by The History Channel. The video is well worth your time. I recommend that you watch the video first so that you will know what you're looking at when you go through the shrine and garden area. If you are looking directly at the shrine, the video area is located to your left.

Although I'm not a history "fan," I'm glad that I saw the Alamo and zipped through the exhibits. I can check it off my list of things to do in life.

“Great lesson in American history”

The Alamo is a beautiful site, with amazing architecure.

We started with a walk through the area behind the church/ shrine, and then were lucky enough to listen to the history of The Alamo, told by one of the very knowledgeable historians, in the Cavalry Courtyard. He had us on the edge of our seats, while he told the story behind the Alamo. He must have told the story a million times, but he was such a good story-teller that it seemed like the first time. I really didn't know much about the history, except for what I've seen in movies, so it was good to get the right facts.

Afterwards we walked through the church / shrine, and had a better understanding of what it must have been like at the time.

We took many photos, but it is almost impossible to get a photo without another human (or stroller) in it. We ended up going back three times, at different times of the day, in order to get different photos.

“Worth a visit, but somewhat boring.”

The Alamo is definitely worth a visit if you happen to be in the San Antonio area because of its historic significance, but it only takes about an hour to walk around. Keep in mind that you can take pictures from the outside, but not inside. It's a beautiful structure and the grounds are nice, but overall we found it boring - there wasn't really a whole lot to see.
