“World class exhibits”

Peabody Essex Museum

Do yourself a favor and make a point of going to the PEM while staying in Salem, but make sure you start early as there are what seem to be never-ending rooms filled with wonderful displays of artifacts from around the world. Our favorite was the tour of the Chinese house, Yin Yu Tang. For an additional $4.00, you can tour this home, which was brought over from Chine, and dates back a couple of hundred years, complete with audio devices to listen to at numbered displays. It would truly take you an entire day to see everything in this museum, which is open from 10-5. Each room you enter, flows to yet another room, with everything from paintings to asian art to maritime furnishings, to strange photography, and much more. A wonder relaxing way to spend a day.

We spent 1/2 day at the Peabody Essex Museum on an uncrowded day in March. We visited several of the historic buildings on an included tour (book ahead during busy times) and spent 1/2 hour in the Yin Yu Tang House (book ahead during crowded times). The Yin Yu Tang House costs extra and is a must; definitely one of the most interesting museum experiences I have ever had--and I am a bit of a museum junkie. Feels like you are walking into a Chinese new-wave film; the included audio tour is both informative and touching. The museum collection is huge and varied--the kind of museum where you just pick and choose which galleries to linger in and which to pass by based on your own interests. The museum store has high-quality textiles from Asia--you could do serious damage to your Visa card. This is a rather expensive museum. Some of the local hotels and B & B's have special packages that include admission.

As someone who has done design work for a number of museums, I have to say that the PEM is outstanding. In particular, we made a trip out to see the Joseph Cornell show, which was spectacular. Definitely worth the price of admission for the open-minded and learning-oriented visitor to Salem.

“Don't miss this!”

If you were only spending one day in Salem, you could well spend it here. The museum is attractive with nice exhibits, but what makes this a standout is the tour of historic properties owned by the museum. Included in the admission is a tour of nearby houses. This alone is well worth the admission. Get there early to get your tickets for later tours. Although not Salem history, whatever you do, don't miss the Chinese house. If they kick you out before your finish, grab another ticket if you can; the experience is unique. You see the house of a merchant bought lock and stock and barrel with its furnishings. Take the time to listen to the interpretation on the electronic device they hand out.
