Castell d`Empordà was our perfect hideaway!
It met all our expectations!

We loved our room and what a beautifull view! When we walked in the evening to the restaurant over the torch lit terrace we felt like the prince and princesse of the castle!
We found the service very friendly and helpfull. Although the menu wasn`t big ( maybe because it was february and the beginning of the season), but the food and especially the home made pastas where delicious!

We were a group of four couples on a birthday mini break, the website offers the World with awards for this and that and we were thinking wow can't wait this place sounds amazing. It has amazing views and the castle is stunning and well restored and modernized our room was beautiful but the service was terrible. We were treated like we were an annoyance at the bar rather than welcome business. The restaurant staff also were slow on service & unmotivated in everything except expense and charged us for 11 bottles of water when we had jugs of tap, when we quizzed them about it they replied that they were filling the jugs with bottled water as the castle water is contaminated! Why didn't they say that they couldn't do jugs. I must have "Mug" tattooed on my forehead! We asked for Cava and weren't offered a wine list they just served us the most expensive on the list ( we only discovered this after the event). We feel robbed and it has left a bitter taste in the otherwise pleasant three day trip to Girona & Barcelona. The owners need to seriously shake down the front of house team and I would have an obvious Manager around because in three days we saw no evidence of anybody in charge to deal with our unhappiness, a few nice words would have changed everything.

Ok we stayed here recently as a party of eight. Lovely location stunning views but all here is not good. beware the sewage farm close by when the wind blows in the wrong direction ... that really is knock out. The food in the restaurant and the breakfast were both good although when we asked for water there was some confusion as we asked or jugs and when the bill came we had been charged for bottled water. The excuse was that you cannot drink the tap water here so they had filled jugs for us with bottled water !!!! yeah yeah !!
Also bar service is slow and grudging .... buying the bar man a drink certainly speeded things up but otherwise things were slow. We felt pretty ripped off on the first day when we ordered 2 bottles of cava and were charged 45 euros for each one ....now we know why they are reluctant to let you see the wine list in the bar. There are other stunning restaurants around within 20 mins drive but a reluctance on the part of the staff to tell you about them.

We have been visiting this part of the Costa Brava for many years and know the Girona area very well but it is always a pleasure to return to this gentle part of Spain/Catalunya.
On arrival we found the front desk girl very helpful and she escorted us to our garden suite for a 2 night stay. The room was superb with a very large comfortable double bed ,ample settees for lounging on and adequate wardrobe space. A few more hangers would have been useful but this seems the norm in most hotels. The TV was large wide screen and there were a good selection of local Spanish and Catalan channels to get an overview of the area. The view from our balcony was superb. The piece de resistance was the magnificent large bathroom, Typical modern Catalan style with a a supersize bath next to a picture window looking out into the valley. No chance of getting overlooked here!!
The open shower was very powerful and refreshing and the long double open washbasin was a nice touch,
The restaurant staff were excellent on our first night and OK on our second. The food was OK. About 100euros for a 3 course meal with apperitif and bottle of house wine, coffee and liquer. Drink Measures were a bit sparse for Spain ,more like an English pub measure!!
The grounds were lovely and we appreciated the nicely laid out herb garden where the restaurant staff could be seen collecting for the next meal. It was a bit too cold to use the pool but warm enough to lie out on the ample large padded sun loungers with their lovely views.

Overall a very good hotel that we would recommend and return to.
