“Good property, indifferent staff”

Hampton Inn and Suites Atlanta Downtown

Oct 8, 2007

The Hampton Inn and Suites – Downtown Atlanta has many good things going for it – comfort, cleanliness, and location. Unfortunately, the front desk staff during my stay could be described as “indifferent” at best.

The good:
The room – My king suite room was nicely furnished. One room had a couch, TV, 2-drawer stand, coffee table, end table, large working desk, 5-point chair, and another chair. Kitchen had a full-size refrigerator, 2 burners, full-size microwave, coffee maker, utensils, and even a dishwasher. Bathroom had a nice long counter, water was on the “too hot” side if anything (that’s a good thing). Bedroom had the typical very nice Hampton bed and sheets, another TV, plenty of drawers, a closet, 2 night stands, plenty of light. Everything was clean, comfortable, and quiet.

The property – Typical Hampton breakfast, not extraordinary but not bad. Like other Hamptons, CNN Headline News plays in the breakfast room. (Since CNN’s headquarters is in Atlanta, that’s not particularly surprising.) Great location for downtown, aquarium, New World of Coke, conference center, and various sports/event facilities. About 1 mile from King Center. Public transportation nearby. Lots of police presence in downtown corridor – I did not see anything remarkable. (Just avoid walking toward Georgia State, there is a *lot* of loitering in the park nearby.)

The bad:
The front desk. On arrival, it took 19 minutes to check in. There was one person ahead of me, apparently involved in an extended negotiation over price. During that negotiation, another person came in and either cut in line or returned to the line; in any case, I didn’t question it. At no point during this 19 minutes, did the front desk person acknowledge that I was waiting in line, or that there was a family behind me who were also waiting in line. Another night, I had to call the front desk. It took 3 tries, each time letting the phone ring a looooong time, before it was answered. And then, when I went to purchase something from the “suite shop”, the front desk person told me the price, then walked away. No eye contact, no reaching for the money, nothing. (There were no other customers at the front desk or on the phone.) It felt like front desk staff were trained to (1) ignore customers, and (2) not get additional help when needed.

So, would I stay there again? Probably. I liked the location and property, and I’m hoping that the experience I had with the front desk staff is not reflective of the overall hotel – it’s certainly not the experience that I’ve had at other Hampton Inns.

“I was prepared”

Hampton Inn and Suites Atlanta Downtown

Well I must say Thank You to the people who do leave feedback on here. I stayed @ The Hampton Inn for 4 nights w/ my daughter and niece. We arrived into the Atlanta Airport @ about 12 midnight and I took my chances on the train........wow! The train ride was smooth but as soon as we got out of the train on Peachtree there was a panhandler doing his rounds...any who we hurried up the escalator and stepped out onto Spring St. & as we were walking another panhandler approached us w/ an umbrella (it was showering) offered us some cover and asked where we were headed as he was walked w/ us......we were very very nervous....BUT I was prepared since I had read this on someones review & thought to myself this sort of thing is normal....he walked us to the hotel & asked if we could help him w/ $8.50....LOL. He had the nerve to walk into the hotel past the sleeping security guard outside (may as well been asleep) & stepped up to the front desk....the lady @ front desk welcomed us & asked if we were all together & he says YES...so I said well we're not together he was kind enough to walk us here....so we pulled out $5 and handed it to him & sent him on his way! There were panhandlers everywhere. We did all our sightseeing & tours in the daytime & made sure to be back in our room by dawn!!! During the day we were safe.... police on every corner :) We walked to CNN, Centennial Park, The Aquarium, The Underground and took the bus to The Zoo. There were restaurants close by like Hard Rock, Steak & Ale, McDonalds & several others. We also booked a tour w/ Grayline & it took us to The Carter Library, MLK Center & World of Coca Cola. Oh about our room, it was clean, quiet & cozy no complaints....housekeeping comes around everyday but we declined it twice & had her tidy up our room once. The breakfast was enough they switched it out everyday sausage w/ eggs or waffles w/ sausage. They provided bagels, muffins, cereal, o.j., apple juice, milk, coffee everyday. I would stay @ The Hampton Inn again.

“Number 2 in Popularity Index?”

Hampton Inn and Suites Atlanta Downtown

This will probably sound elitist, but I'm beginning to get concerned that TripAdvisor.com is becoming a promoter of inexpensive to moderately priced chain hotels with free breakfasts... rated extremely high in the popularity indices, perhaps by folks who don't travel a lot (?). A Wingate and a Hampton Inn ranked number one and two among all the hotels in Atlanta? There, I said it and I feel a little better. Now to move on to my review:

I arrived at the Atlanta airport around 8:00 or so on a Monday evening, and decided to take the MARTA to the hotel area even though I was unsure how safe that would be. As it turned out, MARTA was fine... lots of other travelers on board. The Peachtree Center station wasn't a problem either, with lots of families and tourists on the streets in the busy Peachtree part of town. The hotel was a couple of blocks off the main drag, but that turned out not to be a problem, because a very friendly homeless gentleman escorted me to the front door for the bargain price of $2.00 (reduced from his asking price of $20.00). At any rate, I would gladly take the MARTA to the hotel again, as opposed to renting a car.

When I arrived at the hotel, I had been upgraded to a suite because the kingsize bedrooms were sold out. The usual Hilton bedding was very nice, as was the shower, and the suite had a full-sized refrigerator, stove, microwave (with complimentary popcorn), plates, etc. However, the rooms seemed dark to me, in part because of the carpeting but mostly because of the rather old, decrepit lighting. The phones also seemed like something from the 70's, and need to be updated. True to the saying that everything seems better in the morning, the corner bedroom had lots of sunlight streaming in the two windows before I checked out to start my day.

A standard Hampton complimentary breakfast started the day off right, with both hot and cold offerings (some sort of processed fried eggs and sausage, but not bad), in a nicely sunlit corner dining area.

All in all, and given the good central location of this hotel, I'd have to say it was a bargain rate at $109 plus tax (the Government rate).

“A bargain in downtown Atlanta”

Hampton Inn and Suites Atlanta Downtown

What a delightful find in downtown Atlanta! Good location, convenient to walk to Centennial Olympic Park, CNN Center, Philips Arena and other attractions and restaurants. Rate was favorable compared to other hotels in the area but no sacrifice in quality. Lobby staff was quite friendly. Room was clean, beds comfy, free breakfast better than most and there was plenty of seating. Small but adequate business center. Parking lot adjacent to hotel ($15/night).

“Surprisingly nice”

Liked my big and fairly newly remodeled two room suite, luxurious bed, the included wireless internet. Downtown Atlanta is pretty dreary, though, especially after dark.
