After reading the reviews of the Wyndham Midtown with all of the rappers hanging out in the lobby, we selected the Residence Inn - Historic based on the rave reviews found here. The property itself was very nice and the rooms were spacious, although the temperature ran a little too warm. The breakfasts were pretty good, and we found that if you asked for a food to be replenished, it was, even toward the end of the breakfast service. The nearby Marta station was helpful for those going to Five Points or the Braves games (pathetic as they are playing in late July 2006!).
However, we did not escape the rappers. On the north side of the building is a club. There's no problem until around 1 or 1:30 a.m. when apparently, they open up the doors and the windows to share their activities with EVERYONE in the neighborhood. It doesn't really quiet back down until after 2 a.m. We were in Room 508 and it truly sounded like they were right outside the window. While the hotel provides ear plugs to quiet the "city noise" (their words, not mine), it was not nearly enough. We were there on Thursday through Saturday night. So if you decide to stay here, insist on a southside room away from the club.
We weren't too impressed with the desk staff either. For some reason, despite the fact that our reservation clearly stated a three night stay and we orally reiterated the number of nights at check-in, they changed our door lock on the first full day because they thought we weren't staying more than one night. Because my husband was attending a conference while I went sightseeing, we didn't return to the room at the same time, so whenever they re-keyed the room, our two keys never matched, I also thought the main desk clerk was less than friendly and helpful. He took a "it's your fault" attitude about the lock situtation.
We wouldn't rate this property as the top 5 hotel. It was perfectly acceptable, other than the noise situation. Be aware before you go and let them know you are aware of the problems with the club noise in the early morning hours. Hopefully, on the other side of the building, it won't be as noticeable.
