I just returned from a weekend stay at the Residence Inn Atlanta Midtown Historic. I met up with some college girlfriends for a reunion. A couple of the girls live in Atlanta and suggested that those of us from out of town look for a hotel in Midtown Atlanta. There are definitely swankier places to stay, but I didn't think that this group would want to pay $350 a night to stay at the "W." I chose this hotel because it was within walking distance to Midtown bars and restaurants, and it also was a large room with two queen beds and a sofabed, so there was room for everyone to sleep. At $149 a night plus tax, it was a good deal.
The room was indeed very large with a living room and separate bedroom. The kitchenette was sufficient, but in much need of updating. This building was once an apartment building, and I think the cabinets were from the 1970s. The bedroom was large and the beds were very comfortable, as is true in most Marriott chain hotels. The bathroom was sufficient, but old as well. All in all the room was pretty clean and it served our needs for the weekend. We weren't in the room all that much.
The location of this hotel is good if the party scene is what you are seeking. It is within walking distance of Midtown bars, and there is even one in the same building as the hotel. Apparently there were other party seekers staying at the property because you could hear the "woo-hoos" and "yeahs!" coming from other rooms as you walked the hallways. Once inside the room, I didn't hear any other guests, but there was some road noise. That didn't bother me, but may be a nuisance to people traveling with small children or those actually looking for a restful stay.
I'd say that this is a good choice if you are in the 20-25 year age range. As a 30 year old who is really past the party days, I would have spent the extra money to stay at the "W." I am more of a steak dinner and martini kind of girl these days vs. nachos and beer. I would definitely not recommend this hotel to families or those seeking a quiet weekend away.
