Right before the Christmas holidays, I stayed at the Westin on two seperate occassions. Once for 1 night, once for 3 nights. The first time we stayed (my husband, mother, and I) we were on the 51st floor. Our room was a bit outdated and the carpet in our room and in the hallways was very dirty and in need of replacement. While my husband and I are Starwood Preferred Guests, we arrived early and were told that the "room reserved for us" was not ready, but that if we wanted to check in (at 10 a.m.!) that we could take another room. We agreed, since we were thrilled that we could check in that early. Well, after our 2nd visit, this time my husband, our 7 year old god daughter and her 9 year old sister, we wished that we would have waited for our "correct" room the first time around! We were put on the 61st floor, which is for Starwood Preferred Guests only. The room was much nicer, cleaner, and the hallways and floor carpets were a lot better than on the other floor. So, being a Starwood Preferred member is a good idea. Sign up before you go. The hotel is in a good location, very close to MARTA (Atlanta's train system), an easy walk to Olympic Park-a must see especially for the fountain shows-see times for shows at the park, and across the street from several dining options-Hard Rock Cafe, Hooters, McDonalds, etc. I would also recommend the Old Spaghetti Factory, on Ponce de Leon Ave. if you have time and have a car to get there. If you do visit the Spaghetti factory, ask if Ebony is working and try to be seated in her section. We have visited this restaurant countless times and she was fabulous to us and our kids. Their indoor pool was nice, though a little cool for my liking. The kids really seemed to like it. There was no hot tub, which I would have enjoyed. There were plenty of comfy chairs and towels around the pool though. The only complaints I have is that my husband requested to have a UPS package delivered to the hotel on the morning of our departure and it took them 30 minutes to find where they had put it. Also, they drained the pool (never gave a reason) and it wasn't to be opened again till the 30th. So, I was stuck with 2 restless kids who were very disappointed the pool was going to be closed for the duration of our stay. Thank goodness we were checking out the following day! The view from their restaurant, the Sundial, was awesome. Hotel guests can ride to the top for a look, even if you aren't planning to eat in the restaurant. Just show your room key to the person attending the desk. For non-hotel guests, the charge is $5. Parking is $20 per day, with unlimited ins&outs. We were very impressed with the parking attendants, as they got to know our names and were very prompt and courteous. Atlanta as a whole is a nice place to visit if you stick to the touristy locations. But, there seemed to be pretty rough folks all around the city. So, do your research. For business, it can't be beat. But, I don't think I'd plan a "real" vacation in this city. But, the Westin was a nice place to stay. We would return there. If you want the best view, ask for a room as high up as possible. They will try to accomodate you.
