Great location, across Esplanade from the quarter between Chartres and Royal. We took the train to New Orleans and a cab from the train station to the house (~$13). We walked everywhere and rode the street car from Canal street over to the Garden District. With this location, a good pair of walking shoes, and being healthy enough to walk everywhere, you don't need a car.
Before the trip, I was a little concerned about safety. Those concerns turned out to be completely unfounded. We got to the house late (about 9:30 pm), checked in and left on foot after 10:00 on a Monday night. We walked up Esplanade a few blocks to Port of Call for one of the their famous HUGE burgers. At 11:00 that first night, we walked down Bourbon and zigzagged our way back to the house, getting back well after midnight.
We booked through bookit.com and got a fantastic rate. The room we had was on the backside of the complex - room 116. It was basically like a hotel room except it had old wood floors and period furniture. The room is on the first floor of the carriage house on the backside of the property. The door to the room opens out onto the sidewalk. This is the only room that does that. The rest of the doors to the rooms are inside the main house or inside the gated courtyard. At first, I was a little worried about safety, but we just checked the sidewalk through the window before opening the door to leave. Never had any issues.
The refrigerator in our room didn't work and when we told the staff, they already knew. It was a little inconvenient, but we got by fine with ice. But if they know about the refrigerator not working, go pick one up at Walmart for $79! It would have been nice to have a coffee maker in the room. Basically, we just used the room for sleeping so we weren't there much.
Bottom line - great location at a great price. If I go back to N'awlins and I can get that bookit.com rate again, I'm staying at the Lamothe House.
Almost forgot - one of the highlights of the trip - we ran into Noah Wyle (Dr. Carter on E.R.) filming a movie in one of the old cemeteries in the Garden District. Nice guy. Didn't mind posing for a photo with the fiance.
