“good - but not perfect - hideaway”

Waka Gangga

3 of 5 stars
Berlin, Germany

The Waka Gangga is beautifully located in a cluster of rice paddies above the ocean. Very remote from any kind of activity and with nothing to distract from the beautiful scenery, which is just what we wanted.

The stay was very enjoyable and the staff genuinely friendly. However, the hotel is obviously suffering from somewhat apathetic management, which is sad because it would otherwise be just perfect and almost on par with substantially more expensive venues (e.g. Aman Resorts). Rooms were nicely decorated, but fabrics - couch pillows, bed throws, curtains - were heavily stained and in desperate need of a wash. Lots of cobwebs in the room and dusty closet interior. Messy storage rooms with fluorescent lighting in plain view behind the reception area day and night. Also, while the restaurant food was okay, choices were too limited and preparation too bland for a longer stay with no alternative food options in the neighborhood.

Overall, maintenance and cuisine was below standard of what the hotel tried to be - and could be under more stringent management -, but beautiful scenery in remote location made up for much of the shortcomings.

“Remote!”

Waka Gangga

We knew that the Waka Gangga was in a secluded area, but I guess we weren't quite prepared for how really remote it is! If you do not have your own transport, the hotel receptionist will tell you that it takes 45minutes for the taxi service to arrive at the hotel, and a trip to the Kuta area will take about 1 hr. It's best to hire a car with a driver if you're not planning to spend the entire duration of your stay in the hotel.

Our family booked 3 rooms and the 2 rooms that had glassed-in bathtubs were not as gross as the one w/ the open concept bathroom which had mildew and lots of flying bugs and flies.

The vista fr every part of the hotel property is truly spectacular. But, the beach is not so great. Quite a bit of rubbish washes up on the black sands. the hotel should really play a part in cleaning up the beach to make it more pleasant for guests.

“Loved the serenity and landscape”

Waka Gangga

Jakarta, Indonesia

I came here on my honeymoon back in august 2004. We loved the place. Each villa is surrounded by sloping rice terraces which fringe a sparkling black sand beach on the edge of the Indian Ocean. The place is what My Husband said "The perfect place to find serenity". It's just amazing to see the rice terrace standing side by side with the indian ocean. We took a walk in the black sandy beach looking at the ocean, in the morning. You could also ride a horse there, they have a stable.

The restaurant is perched on the edge where you can look straight to the ocean. The bungalow itself is nice - nice outdoor bathroom with sunken bath and proper shower. Complete aminities. Nice, complete breakfast. They serve breakfast in the veranda where we can have our toast while looking at the paddy field & Ocean.

A free tour to Tanah Lot is included as part of the hotel package. The hotel is 2 hours driving from the airport

“spectacular location, good food”

The location is perfect if you like to be in an isolated, luxury and non touristy spot, with on one side the sea and on the other side the ricefields. The local people use the beach in their own way, riding motorcycles, having a snack, taking a walk and standing in the sea. The bungalows were really nice, especially the bathroom with outside shower. However, the hotel could use a new coat of paint. Breakfast and dinner was good. the location of the restaurant is perfect, right above the beach. We just walked in and found the price negotiable.

“A great beginng, very romantic”

We began our honeymoon in Bali at this very romantic secluded spot. We were one of only a few people at the hotel and we felt that the whole complex was ours.

The site is beautiful from every direction and it is hard to do anything but take a bath or shower in the gorgeous garden bathrooms, look at the view of the beach and rice paddy through the 270 degree window in your room, or eat at the restaurant that is perched on top of a hill that gives stunning views.

The greats about this place are . . . .
1) the staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. They are incredibly responsive and always willing to help

2) The food was very good particularly the breakfast that is included with your stay

3) The pool is wonderfully placed and very, very relaxing

4) It is very secluded so there is no one ever trying to approach or sell you things

5) There is a temple close by that is welcoming of visitors as long as you have a sarong. We were invited by some of the people that live there to attend a special festival where famous dances are performed (this was not a show but the real deal)

6) Horse back riding on the beach - I actually thought this was just Ok but my husband loved it.

The not so greats

1) The locals dump their trash on the beach so it is dirty

2) The spa treatments were mediocre and after going to other places in Bali we realized how overpriced they were (although excellently priced for US). We paid $75 for a 2 hour treatment. In Ubud at a place called Bali Botanica we paid $100 for 8 hours at the spa, and in Munduk we paid $20 for a 1.5 hour massage.

3) We did not check to see how much laundry cost before we sent it to be done. When we checked out we where shocked to find out that it cost us $75 US Dollars. We could have bought all new clothes for that!
