This place has to be seen to be believed! It oozes personality. Even if it's not really your type of personality, you can't help but be impressed. We actually stayed in a flat next door to the main guesthouse, complete with four-poster bed and kitchenette, filled with the kind of appliances you'd find at a retro fair - including possibly the oldest microwave in existence.
The main house is positively teeming with object-d'artes, and there's barely a surface or inch of wall that's not covered with a variety of photographs and paintings. With pink and red walls (and many other colours besides), the feel is part opulent Versailles palace, part Victorian boudiore, part Edwardian drawing room, part garage sale. There are newspapers, internet and a range of books about the local area, with an encyclopaedic hostess who can direct you to the best local eatieries, walking routes and local (ie celebrity) gossip.
But the jewel in the crown has to be the breakfast. It was rather like a scene from Gosford Park, with all the guests sat around a huge oval dining table, being served everything from bacon and eggs, to baked pear pancakes (never had them before, but if they're on offer when you're there, you've got to give them a try), to endless fruit, yoghurt, cereals, tea (including a range of herbal teas), coffee and just about anything you ask for. And it's all served on a mix of beautiful decorative china and silverware, combined with far less formal bits and bobs that add to the eccentricity of it all.
Take the time to ask about all the pictures on the walls and the trinkets stuffed into the cabinets, as each one comes with a story. The new hostess has apparently taken over from her friend, of whom she says "she's the collector; she's the eccentric one" - which seems almost impossible considering the new Madame is every bit the genial oddball hostess and topping her bubbly personality must be quite something!
Then there's the conversation... Just say the words, "Obama", "theatre", "baseball", "healthcare", "the weather", or whatever takes your fancy, and you'll be sat there long after the lovely maids have cleared your plates away, swapping stories and debating all sorts with your fellow guests, not to mention a hefty contribution or three from your enthusiastic host, and you'll start the day (or what's left of your morning, given how long you've been sat there eating, drinking and talking) with a fed stomach and mind.
Whatever you do, just don't sleep in and miss it!
Then go walk off all those pankakes. That beautiful part of Brooklun is like a scene out of Sesame Street, with mini yard-sales on virtually every stoop, and the beautiful Prospect Park is right on your doorstep.
There are bowls of sweets everywhere too - my only disappointment was that I left with a pocket-full of licorice chews when I thought thet were mint!
If you've only got one night in Brooklyn, this is most definitely the place to be.
