“Terrific Value, Unbeatable Location”

Latham Hotel

Jun 4, 2008

We've stayed at the Latham many times. Have tried other Philadelphia hotels, but always return here. Yes, its a bit worn and rooms are small, but the location is perfect and the rooms have an old world charm. Considering the reasonable cost, I see no reason to complain. There are so many great restaurants within easy walking distance that room service just isn't necessary.

“Ok for a short stay”

Latham Hotel

Jun 3, 2008

I stayed for one night in April. I was expecting the hotel to be a bit smarter than I found it, but chose it mainly for its location, which was indeed very central and convenient. It was a little outdated and musty, but no problems, and I would say perfectly fine if you just need a base to explore!

“I love this shabby/elegant hotel”

Latham Hotel

May 21, 2008

I have stayed at the Latham Hotel twice. This hotel is a bit "tired" but has a lot of elegance. Apparently, it was a luxury apartment house in the golden age of Philadelphia. There's nice marble in the bathroom and the slightly unusual furniture is nice and old-fashioned. The front desk staff was professional -- gracious. Nice toiletries and a coffee maker in the room...

If you want a brand-new hotel, you might freak out and have a bad time... This place has character and it's a tiny bit gloomy -- a bit like Philly! I am emotionally attached to this hotel and will always stay there. ...No room service. I wish the cocktail lounge in the lobby would reopen.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Old-fashioned and classy
    • Disliked — No room service, restaurant or bar. Also, there's no mini-bar in the room.

“Would stay there again.”

Latham Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Charlottesville, VA
May 13, 2008

My friend and I came to Philadelphia to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit. The Latham was one of the Philadelphia Art Museum participating hotels which gave us VIP tickets to the exhibit as part of our room cost. We loved the hotel. Our room was well appointed and gave us a cozy feeling. It was clean with comfortable beds and two bottles of water. That's refreshing considering most hotels have the mini-fridge which is outrageously priced. Our view of the old church just added to the charm. Theafternoon staff was not as friendly as I would have expected. Not rude. Just not what we are used to "Southern Hospitality." However the Sat morning staff made up for it. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to my friends.

“Not a bad hotel but not great service either!”

Latham Hotel

2 of 5 stars
Pittsburgh, PA
May 8, 2008

We stayed here while in the city for an engagement party. The location is GREAT--you can walk anywhere in the city pretty much, very convenient. Also, the valet service was very convenient. The room itself was not bad, a little old but not dirty or anything--just in need of an update I think. I really had no problem with the room or the hotel itself... the problems were with the staff. Upon arrival, I wanted to pay for the room up-front in cash, because I didn't want to carry all that cash around with me for the entire weekend. I personally prefer to pay cash rather than use my credit card, and the staff was not thrilled about it for some reason. I felt like what business of it is theirs how I like to pay?? Anyway, after an annoying debate about it, the room was paid for in cash. And to be nice, I even gave them my credit card number in case of extra costs, damages, etc. so they wouldn't feel stiffed if something happened. Anyway, we were only staying there for one night, and the next morning I noticed a bill had been slipped under our door. It was a bill for the room, as if I hadn't already paid! Also, we were charged for 2 nights on this bill! Upon checkout, I explained the situation, but the staff was rude and acted like I was lying that I had already paid claiming that there was no record of me paying cash. Thank god for the maintenance man... he had seen me check in and was standing near the desk during check out and confirmed my story. All in all, the hotel waived the erroneous bill, but they had already put a hold on my card (for TWO nights stay), so I had to wait for a week or two for the hold to fall off. So annoying. Aside from the staff, the hotel was fine... I just wouldn't tell my friends to stay there, given my experience.
