“A piece of history”

Morris House Hotel

If I'm ever anywhere near Philadelphia, you can bet I'll stay at the Morris House. Pleasant staff, beautiful quarters. And the beds were so comfortable! I've stayed there twice now, once in the suite adjoining, and once on the 3rd floor. Now I've got to warn you, there is no elevator, so lugging your suitcase up 3 flights of stairs can be a little difficult, but I'm glad they've preserved the place as is, rather than tear it up for the amenity of an elevator.

It's amazing to look around the house and see all the history. Peruse the bookcase in your room, and you'll probably find century old books on every subject. Imagine the history that this house witnessed - Thomas Jefferson returning from a stroll to his house blocks away, George Washington arriving into town in his carriage, the bell of Independance Hall ringing to signal the signing of the Declaration of Independance... If you want to set the mood right, stay here!

“Wonderful bed, lousy breakfast”

Morris House Hotel

Mar 28, 2007

My room was spacious and nicely furnished. The best thing was the bed – by far the softest, most comfortable hotel bed I've ever experienced. Simply heaven for someone like me who tends to find hotel beds insufferably hard. That would be reason enough for me to return. The breakfast, though, is another matter. I felt cheated by the ridiculously poor selection of two types of cereal, horrible "fruit salad" (in reality, just chunks of underripe, hard melon with zero flavor), and godawful coffee and tea. If they don't want to do breakfast properly, they shouldn't do it at all.
The service was not as bad as many other reviewers found it but certainly lacking in professionalism and courtesy. They should all be fired. Note on room: it included books which I thought added a nice visual touch – until I discovered tomes like the autobiography of Billy Graham and a book on Ronald Reagan. I find this highly offensive. Plus, the place is very noisy with lots of traffic, including the underground train which can be heard clearly plus ambulances from the hospital accross the street. So bring earplugs, otherwise even the wonderful bed is not much good.

“Gorgeous room”

Morris House Hotel

We used to live a few blocks from the Morris House, so on a recent return trip to Philadelphia we decided to revisit our old neighborhood and stay in the B&B for one night. It's a beautifully restored house that backs on to Washington Square and is within a five minute walk of the Liberty Bell. However, it's definitely not on the tourist trail, and in fact can be difficult to find. Fellow guests we met at breakfast told us their taxi driver had had difficulty. Tell your taxi driver that the Morris House is across the street from the Wills Eye Hospital and that might help.

Our room was large, in the old part of the house (there is a modern extension) with a less attractive view of the hospital, and a beautiful one of the courtyard garden. A CD player, bottled water, chocolates, soft bath robes and fresh flowers were provided.

We spent an hour in the afternoon in one of the parlors, drinking tea, eating cookies and reading magazines in front of the open fire. Breakfast the next morning was a little disappointing: heavy on the carbs with bagels, pastries and granola. But it's arranged family style on a long table, where you sit with other guests. We met some very interesting people who were attending the Philadelphia Flower Show that week.

This is a beautiful, restful place with great amenities. The garden is lovely in the summertime, and still attractive at other times of year.

“Awful Service.”

Morris House Hotel

Although the hotel is beautiful, the service is by far the worst I have ever experienced in my life. It's unprofessional and mediocre and worse than being in an Adams Family show (see the review by a TripAdvisor member on 6/5/05)

I am not the type of person who complains a lot but what I had to endure at Morris House was beyond belief.

1. The first incident happened the minute I opened the door to check in. I had not even put my luggage down and was still 15 feet away from the front desk when the lady at the front desk started bombarding me with questions. I didn't say anything.

2. That evening, I went to the living room downstairs to watch TV. To my dismay and oblivious to my presence, the manager (Mr. D.) continued watching a TV show in a foreign language without even asking me whether I would like to change the channel or not. I had to wait until he left the room to switch to another channel.

3. The next day I called Mr. D. and asked him if he could tell me which bars have live music. Instead of calling around to get the information, as he was supposed to do, he chose to yell at me saying “I’ve already told you yesterday that I don't have that information!". I went downstairs to tell him that that his behavior was totally inappropriate and uncalled for. He was defensive at the beginning and became aggressive when I told him that he needs to do his job properly.

4. That same evening, I returned to the hotel at around 9 pm. The first thing the night manager said when I came in was not,” Hello", but “Are you a guest or what?!" How welcoming!

5. On my last day, I went downstairs to check out. I had just started telling Mr. D. about my complaints when he abruptly cut me off and said he doesn’t want to listen to what I have to say and if I have complaints I need to put them in writing! Unbelievable!

The only person that seems to be doing their job properly while I was there was the maid. It’s obvious that the front desk has serious training issue and needs an overhaul.

In short, and as other guests have stated in their reviews, the service at Morris House Hotel is mediocre, dysfunctional, rude and unwelcoming. Had I not prepaid for 3 nights, there is no doubt I would have checked out immediately.

Don’t waste your time and money. Avoid this place like the plague!
