“Sorry, but we were disappointed too!”

I wish I had read the previous reviews first and at least, would have known what to expect. We were able to park right in front over Easter weekend (5 stars). We also were greated with a smile and please sign your credit slip, it's already been run through (1 star) as soon as we entered the place. Your room is upstairs (glad I had re-confirmed our room earlier). It was the guest suite, very nice, lots of light, would have loved a TV in the bedoom but ok.(3 stars). Breakfast: We, too, are used to high class B & B breakfast but no one asked or told us if we had a choice; we got scambled egg, 1 piece of very well done bacon and some mixed fruit, coffee and juice (star 1). Their "brochure/phamplet" said so much was within walking distance (if you like to walk 2+ miles so we drove). There is a 7-11 about 5 blocks away and we did have a small fridge. (star 3) The second morning I arrived at 10 AM, only to find all tableware removed and greeted with "We stop serving prompty at 10 AM". OK, no problem, I'll eat out. I stayed at a table with some other guests to talk and felt like the owner was rushing us out as she kept coming in and out of the room, removing the other guest's dishes, etc. Their strict rule states clearly, if you stay past the 11 AM check out, you pay $25 per each 15 minutes. What is this all about? What happened to customer service, friendly hosts, etc. We were greeted at the doorway as we were leaving and totally felt rushed to get the [--] out. I totally agree that this was not the type of service generally given at a B & B, there was no real warmth with the hosts (nice people but not fuzzy at all). They offered (on paper) some restaurant suggestions with no comments or other information. Couldn't they at least get menus, post address, phone number, anything about each place instead of just names? We tried their "Star" suggestion of Rae's and it sucked. There is a lovely, small Carribean place across the street on 33rd where the food and people were fantastic. I really wanted to like this place and go back often but I expect more from a B & B and Cornerstone didn't hold up. Nadine and Dave were nice but I guess we expected more. Oh,yea, time to take down the Christmas decorations outside, it's spring.

“Worst Stay Ever”

Cornerstone Bed & Breakfast

My wife and I were the only guests, Sunday 20 Jan 2008. Heavy trucks, sirens, student parties, cars burning rubber outside our window all night. Very little sleep. And then I got fined $25 for using an unmarked hallway bathroom the next morning by a furious, red-faced, shaking owner. She explained that it belonged to another room, which made sense, but that is no way to treat guests. We paid our bill and fine and left, skipping breakfast. No way would we continue to face her. Astounding. Very sad.

“Be Careful with the Cornerstone B&B!”

My sister and I recently stayed at this property while visiting Penn Law. I had made our reservation about 2 months ago and upon our arrival was told that the room I had booked was not available "because we gave it to someone who wanted to stay 5 days instead of just 1 night" and "we've moved you to a room on the 3rd floor". I was very distressed by this as I have a disability and cannot climb 3 flights of stairs, and when I told the owner so, she asked if I wanted to cancel the reservation and try the Sheraton. I told her I had no time for that, as we had a dinner reservation in an hour and that she wouldn't like it if I treated her this way. (They have a very lengthy list of Policies that they enforce upon guests, but they evidently don't think guests should expect equal treatment.) The owner then offered us a room on the 2nd floor where we would have one bed and a pullout couch, but that was not to my liking nor in line with what I had booked originally. She finally offered to give each of us separate rooms, but they both involved climbing to the 2nd and 3rd floors and it was a hardship for me. The B&B is lovely in a stately old home, but the bathrooms were old fashioned and didn't allow for makeup items to be used nearby the sink. I can't specifically comment on the breakfast, as we only had time for coffee and fruit, but it was served in a nicely decorated dining area and the owner was very gracious and exuding charm that a.m. - quite a different experience from the same person who greeted us at check-in time! I would use this B&B again, but I would be very assertive about getting the room we booked and not being moved to a more inaccessible room. It is also a short taxi ride to UPenn and Drexel for anyone needing to visit those places.

Management Response

And now the rest of the story. . . . It is true that I changed their room but it was not for the reason that Sister 1 said. The room that Sister 1 and 2 chose was located on the first floor and we use that room for guests with disabilities. I didn’t learn that Sister 1 was disabled until Sister 2 shared that with me later in the evening. I won’t mention the type of disability as Sister 2 said that Sister 1 is very embarrassed by the disability and wants no one to know of it. So, being that the disability was not shared, was hidden from me and we had a guest staying for multiple nights with a known disability. I had moved them to the best suite (as I never move guests into rooms that are less expensive). I did suggest that I call the Sheraton out of concern and not out of malice. I wanted Sister 1 and 2 to be happy and 100% comfortable. The 2 sisters ended up taking 2 suites – Sister 1 took the University Suite and Sister 2 took the Continental Suite – 2 suites for the price of the Basilica Room. I never meant to be rude, but I did mean to be firm. We do not have a long list of rules – only no smoking inside, no children, no pets, and no candles in the room. These are for all of our guests’ safety and insurance coverage.

Comfortable, Cozy and Inviting! But what makes all the difference is the people and they couldn't have been nicer or more gracious.

“Overall a pleasant stay”

Cornerstone Bed & Breakfast

3 of 5 stars
Rockville, MD
Mar 4, 2007

My boyfriend and I stayed at Cornerstone B&B for one night in January. The house itself was very charming and our room (we stayed in the Continental suite on the top floor) was very comfortable and clean. The owners were out of town when we stayed, but the care-taker who was left in charge was very nice. We did not experience the rudeness that others have complained about with regards to check-in/check-out times.

Some of the issues I had with Cornerstone are things the management can't really help, but I thought it best to mention them anyway.
1) Cornerstone is very close to Drexel University and there are several fraternity houses in the area. I was awakened at 2 AM by frat boys shouting and singing loud, profane songs in the street.
2) There isn't a lot of parking around the bed & breakfast. My boyfriend and I went out for dinner and when we came back, had to drive around for an hour trying to find a parking space (this was around 8:00 in the evening on a Saturday night).
3) I was very disappointed with the sugar-laden breakfast fare. We were served a small piece of a cream cheese-type cake with a slice of pineapple, a serving of a very sweet berry crumble dish, and two slices of bacon. Given that I’m not very fond of eating sweet, sugary foods in the morning, I was left decidedly hungry.
4) The Continental suite has a jaccuzi bathtub, however there was a note requesting that guests only use the tub during certain hours and refrain from using it in the evening. Not a big thing, but mildly annoying nonetheless.
