“You get what you pay for.”

Wellington Hotel

Advantages:
The Wellington has a major advantage with regard to its location in Manhattan. Times Square,Broadway, 5th Avenue and Central Park are all within two or three blocks away. It also has a good metro station nearby which allows you to get on a train directly to anywhere in the city and the surrounding boroughs. ( As a sideline note here do not be afraid to use the metro it is cheap and quick).
There are good restaurants nearby with menus at variable prices as well as some of NY's excellent deli's.

The hotel had a restaurant and diner attached to it but I am afraid that I cannot comment on them as we tended to eat out away from the Wellington.

Disadvantages:

The hotel is very old fashioned, in order to get to the lobby you have to carry your luggage up a small flight of steps.

The hotel has two sections, again linked by steps and therefore making it awkward if you have a lot of luggage.

As with most New York Hotels within this grading the rooms are small. The Wellington, in common with many New York hotels, appear to have something against guests who book their reservations on the internet. Out initial room left a lot to be desired, with regard to decoration, the carpet was dirty and the bathroom even lacked a toilet roll holder. After complaining we were offered a room that had been recently refurbished and in fairness was very good for the price paid in respect of a central Manhattan hotel. My advice would be always insist on seeing the room first before signing on the dotted line.

The main reason for not giving the hotel a three star revue is the staff. I have to say the majority of the employees were not the most helpful bunch we have come across. They appeared to find our room complaint a nuisance, and any assistance required seemed to be more bother than it was worth. A lesson at a charm school would not go amiss. The two exceptions were one of the bell hops and the room maid both of which were very helpful, and worked with a smile on their faces.

Overall verdict

As mentioned above you get what you pay for. The Wellington is ideally situated but do not expect a palace.

“Being in jail!”

Wellington Hotel

Hotel needs refurbishment that is not just a lick of paint over 35 previous coats hence peeling. The inside rooms which I received looked at the dark filthy inner part of the hotel and makes you feel like your in jail.
Also there is nothing they can do about that it should at least be kept clean as people throw all their rubbish down and looks unsightly.
Apart from the hotel needing some tlc, the staff where nice and helpful and the location is unbelievable. It is a few minutes walk from central park and afew minutes from time square.
I love New York and would definatly go back but I would choose a different hotel.

“Disappointing”

This hotel was grubby, shabby and in real need of refurbishment. Disgusting cracked shower cubicle filthy carpet, wallpaper peeling off. However, when we notified the chambermaid of our blocked toilet she managed to sort it out straight away. The doormen were like beggars. You dare not look at them in case they expected a tip! When we first arrived we were put in a filthy room with a view of a brick wall. We asked to be moved as were expecting a city view and we were moved to a slightly cleaner room with a decent view. The hotel is very well situated, but I would not recommend it at all. Pay extra and stay somewhere decent.

“Best Location In New York”

Wellington Hotel

We stayed at the Wellington for 4 nights in July 2004 and after reading some of the reviews on this site we were a bit apprehensive about what we would find, but to our great relief the hotel was fantastic, if not a bit old. The staff were very friendly and managed to book us into our rooms with the minimum of fuss and time, especially as we had had a 29 hour journey to get there!
The rooms are a bit small but the beds are so comfy it more than made up for that small inconvienience. Our room had a view of Times Square and Central Park as it was on a corner. The location is superb, 2 blocks from Times Square and 2 blocks from Central Park. The sightseeing tour bus stops right outside.
The Coffee Shop downstairs has the best breakfast we tasted in the USA and the Molyvos restaurant is very cosy. There is also an all year round Christmas shop right next door to the hotel and inside the hotel is a very well equipped shop selling everything from asprins to tee shirts and that is open till midnight.
Downside was the lifts were a bit slow, but when you are on holiday, who is in a rush? Loved it and would go back there and reccommend this hotel to anyone.

“great location”

Wellington Hotel

Jul 12, 2004

we stayed in the wellington for 4 days as part of our honeymoon trip, it was a bit dirty, a stain on the carpet, and small room. Most of the staff were unhelpfull and were annoyed when you asked for directions, if you have not been to new york before you need help getting around, and being in the hotel trade I would think giving directions was part of the service.
