Advantages:
The Wellington has a major advantage with regard to its location in Manhattan. Times Square,Broadway, 5th Avenue and Central Park are all within two or three blocks away. It also has a good metro station nearby which allows you to get on a train directly to anywhere in the city and the surrounding boroughs. ( As a sideline note here do not be afraid to use the metro it is cheap and quick).
There are good restaurants nearby with menus at variable prices as well as some of NY's excellent deli's.
The hotel had a restaurant and diner attached to it but I am afraid that I cannot comment on them as we tended to eat out away from the Wellington.
Disadvantages:
The hotel is very old fashioned, in order to get to the lobby you have to carry your luggage up a small flight of steps.
The hotel has two sections, again linked by steps and therefore making it awkward if you have a lot of luggage.
As with most New York Hotels within this grading the rooms are small. The Wellington, in common with many New York hotels, appear to have something against guests who book their reservations on the internet. Out initial room left a lot to be desired, with regard to decoration, the carpet was dirty and the bathroom even lacked a toilet roll holder. After complaining we were offered a room that had been recently refurbished and in fairness was very good for the price paid in respect of a central Manhattan hotel. My advice would be always insist on seeing the room first before signing on the dotted line.
The main reason for not giving the hotel a three star revue is the staff. I have to say the majority of the employees were not the most helpful bunch we have come across. They appeared to find our room complaint a nuisance, and any assistance required seemed to be more bother than it was worth. A lesson at a charm school would not go amiss. The two exceptions were one of the bell hops and the room maid both of which were very helpful, and worked with a smile on their faces.
Overall verdict
As mentioned above you get what you pay for. The Wellington is ideally situated but do not expect a palace.
