Just returned from business in New York and a stay at the Waldort Astoria. If you are looking for old world style in a convenient Midtown location, this is the place to stay. Are there swankier hotels in New York? Yes, I've stayed at several. Are there hotels with better rooms and/or facilities? Yes, I know from personal experience. Are there hotels with as much tradition and personality. Perhaps only a handful and that is debatable. From the minute you enter off of Lexington or Park Avenue, you know you've stepped into a special hotel. The lobby is a gargantuan, stately cavern with attentive staff and an excellent bar/lounge. The main entry hall is very impressive, leading up to the flower table they change every Monday morning. Venture up a few flights of stairs to the ballroom and see if you're not impressed. The point I'm making goes as follows: how many hotels do you visit where you spend part of your stay walking around to 'tour the grounds.' I can think of only a few.
I have seen critcisms from other members as to the rooms. Since I base all of my reviews on my own personal experience, I can only comment that my room was excellent. I had a fantastic view of the city, a large King bed, a spacious room, and an updated-remodeled bathroom. Perhaps I missed the remodelling other members experienced...
Service was prompt and curteous. I had to place two calls, one for drycleaning and one for room service, both of which were taken care of immediately.
Location of the property is amazing. You're ten blocks away from Central Park and only a few from Midtown's shopping areas on 5th and Madison. You can walk to Broadway. You can walk to Grand Central. You can walk to the Rock.
I can understand the criticism of expense by some members, but you have to bear in mind that 1) this is New York (where all accomodations are overpriced) and 2) this the WA, one of the original luxury hotels in the City. If you want to save money, you should stay in one of the chain hotels.
I highly recommend this property and will consider it the next time I'm in the City for business or pleasure.
