I stayed in the Affinia Manhattan for 5 nights over the Memorial Day weekend, with my mother and teenaged son, and would happily recommend it if you are after a very central location! Our room came with New York noise, but for us, that was part of the charm!
Overall, the hotel is great - the building has great character and the staff (with the notable exception of the completely humourless and unhelpful reservation agent) delightful and very welcoming and helpful. The rollaway I had requested and confirmed by email wasn't in the room, but this was sorted within 5 minutes.
We had a 23rd floor one-bedroom suite, which looked as if it was newly decorated (everything pristine) with a kitchen, sitting room with double sofa bed, closets and bathroom, bedroom with double bed, bathroom and walk-in closet (with iron and ironing board). The kitchen and bathrooms are small, but absolutely functional. The bedroom and sitting room both had TVs, and the door between the two means you can have two completely separate areas - great if you can't stand what the kids are watching on TV!
The kitchen has a fridge, microwave, cooker with oven, pots and pans, china, cutlery and a coffee maker. The wonderful lady from housekeeping Alisha kept everything immaculate, and made sure the coffee never ran out. We had a couple of meals in the room, and everything worked brilliantly.
The main bed is outrageously comfortable, and the sofa bed and rollaway were fine too. The showers worked beautifully, and the toiletries are excellent - from Aveda.
The room faced out over 7th Ave and the NY noise bounced its way up to us, but nothing too intolerable. We had a view over Manhattan across to New Jersey - if you looked carefully, you could just see a bit of the river.
All in all, I would recommend this hotel for its location, and the fact that it was built in the days when proportions were still generous, and walls thick! The bank of lifts meant we never had to wait long for one and having two rooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen meant we never felt cramped.
The front desk were very helpful, especially in recommending the Tick Tock Diner on 34th and 8th - fab breakfasts!
In fact, now that I think about it, every time I dealt with anyone at the front desk they were delightful, especially when we arrived after the long flight from London.
Macy's is one block away, and Penn Station opposite. We walked to Central Park in about 20-25 mins, to Times Square etc in about 15-20 mins, but taxis are always to hand.
