Despit the warnings on these boards, we decided to burn some points this week at the Sheraton New York and Towers. I would not have thought that a company like Starwood, could allow a hotel to operate in the condition that this one is in. The only way that I can describe the attitude of the management, housekeeping and engineering departments is "complacency, and low regard for themselves and their guests."
The Agent who checked us in was a delightful young lady. She was the highlight of our stay.
As a Platinum SPG member, the hotel was kind enough to upgrade us to a suite. It was a bedroom with an adjoining door to a living area. Unless we have reached new levels of stupidity, we could not find a way to leave the doors between the two rooms open, so that we could enter and exit, without using the front doors. The bedroom was functional. Its state of repair was poor. Housekeeping was awful. The used condom floating around in the toilet bowl reminded me of the route that dead goldfish took as a kid. There were M & M's scattered on the floor, electric appliances unplugged (alarm clock and lamp), scotch tape still hanging on the walls from the "Happy Birthday" streamer that may have once hung on the walls, and more. The living area was also in poor repair and upkeep. It looks like the engineering department has put about ten layers of paint on the trim over the years, and in the course of doing so, had a hard time aiming at their target. The furniture was really tacky; my favorite was a blue velvet (where's Elvis?) couch. As was the case in the bedroom, M & M's were scattered on the floor, appliances (stereo) were unplugged, and the 1/2 filled bottle of mouthwash casused me to wonder if the previous user took a swig from the bottle.
The common areas were equally disgusting. On our floor, the "Exit" sign was half-hanging from the wall. Walls and doors were in very poor repair. Speaking of doors, the sound heard from our neighbors were priceless, and alternated between excitement and pressure relief. The doors are paper thin.
Access to the Club Lounge was a nice gesture, but on the early evening of our visit, there was little in terms of food to be had, and I guess I do not remember having to pay for soft drinks (two cokes, $7.50 plus tip). Not one staff member ever greeted us with as much as a hello, or good evening. Breakfast, on the other hand, included an excellent array of items, and we did not get hosed for juice or coffee, as we had anticipated. Again, not one hello or good morning from a staff member.
Would we ever return to this hotel? absolutely not. It is an embaressment to Starwood. The "consitency" that we have come to expect of a major U.S. hotel brand is non-existent. My wife placed our clothes in a plastic garbage liner, and intends to boil them this evening; fearful that we may have picked up who know's what.
If I were to bet, I would bet that this hotel is a "profit machine" for Starwood, and that it is dramatically undercapitalized. The complacency of the staff are tell-tale signs of poor management and oversight by Starwood. I suspect that this is a unionized hotel, and that organized labor is strangling poor management.
To those who might think this hotel can't be that bad, trust me!
