I stayed at the Paramount just a couple of days ago, and after reading the past reviews, I was a bit apprehensive before my trip. I booked my room through Hotwire for $125/night.
Check-in:
A drag, but not really the hotel's fault. I took a red-eye into the city, and got to the hotel around 7am. The receptionist mentioned to me that they had sold out the night before, and so no rooms would be available early. They did however offer to hold my bags until I returned for check-in time (3pm), and also pre-assigned me a non-smoking room, as per my request.
I called the hotel around noon, still no rooms. Called at one, still no rooms. Called at two, still no rooms. Showed up at three, and a room was waiting for me. I was given room sensor keys, as well as a lock key for the room's mini bar.
The room:
My room was on the 15th floor. Very quiet, smelled a little like smoke in the hallway. But the room smelled clean and fresh when I walked in. A couple of minutes later a bellboy came up with my bags, and also "showed" me around the room: thermostat, minibar, shower, etc. I asked him if I could be sent an ironing board and iron, and he said he would have that sent right up.
After he left, I plugged in the old dingy blow-dryer in the bathroom. It blew out. I called reception and asked them to send me a new one. A few minutes later service came up with my iron, board, and a very nice new blow-dryer.
The room was HOT when I got in, but if you have a little sense, you can figure out the thermostat and set it to a comfortable level. The bed IS the room. It takes up pretty much 75% of the floor space. BUT, what else did I want to do with floor space? The size of the room didn't bother me. The bed was soft, very clean, and very comforting after a long day of walking.
The bathroom had a stand up shower with a curtain as a divider from the rest of the bathroom. The sink and toilet were impeccably clean. The walls had cracks, but again, I didn't really care. Bring conditioner, they only provide a nice shampoo, soaps, and a shower cap.
The rest of the hotel:
The lobby is very cool. Very artsy, very relaxing. The only thing is, you can't bring any food into the area. I actually say one woman getting yelled at for bringing her coffee in. But hey maybe she should have read the two huge signs which say "no food or drinks."
The bar downstairs is the best part of the hotel. There are comfy couches everywhere, and the walls are made of chalkboard with artwork and poetry everywhere. The decor is done in dark hues, lots of drapy burgundy fabric, and dark gothic lighting. Very cool. The only not-so-cool part was that cocktails cost $14 each. But hey, again, its New York.
The staff are hit or miss. The girl that checked me in was very nice to me, but very openly rude to the bellman, right in front of me. When walking out, the bellman opened the door about half the time. There was one bellman with dreadlocks who helped me map out an entire day on the subway, along with giving me tips about where to visit. The two girls at the concierge desk were very helpful, and knowledgeable about the area. No one ever helped find me a taxi, but if you walk down the block to the Marriott driveway, the bellman there are more than happy to help you out. The Dean and Deluca servers weren't the friendliest, but did give me change for a $20 even when they didn't have much change in the drawer, and also made me a darn good latte. On check-out day, I called reception to see if I could check-out an hour later, and I received a prompt "Sure, that's not a problem, you won't be charged."
The hotel is located in the heart of the theatre district right next to Times Square, two subway stations, and restaurant row. I HIGHLY recommend the kebab on a stick at one of the Times Square corners.
The reason I rate this hotel highly with 4 yellow circles, despite the so-so-ness of the experience, is because its in NEW YORK CITY, in the heart of the action. For the same price, and the same location, you can usually only find a dirty dingy shady rodent-happy two star motel. For the price, its a very good deal, and one that offers a true New York experience: a little tight, a little self-sufficient, and plenty of cool.
Paramount gets two thumbs up from this Ebert.
