Great price, great location and great room. I was worried about the bad reviews (rats, beg bugs, noise, dirty - not for us), and was favourably impressed with the upgraded rooms in this hotel. Hotel rooms in NYC are expensive, so the New Yorker is an ideal compromise to those seeking a fair priced accomodation in a major chain. It is perfectly located in Midtown, so cab rides were short and cheap, and next to the subway too. If you are doing the tourist thing, this hotel is located very centrally (you can walk to Times Square, Empire State, or home from a Broadway show). We traveled with our mom and her bff, and they loved that Macy's (and lots of other stores) was so close by, and they loved the downstairs convenience of the Tick Tock diner (or as my new yorker friend would call it the "ick ock" given that there are much better places to eat in NYC). The local area is very safe, and easy to get cabs (which is big deal when the city is filled with cabs, all of them full!). Book early. Our renovated room with one queen bed wasc clean, well decorated and on the small side (European-sized), and their renovated room with two double beds was MUCH bigger (very comfortably sized for two people to share). The reviews about the airconditioner are correct - it is a window unit, right next to the bed, and it can be considered loud. In the summer, it would be hot in the small rooms so you would have to run the ac. This is a big hotel, so be prepared for check-in lines, tour groups, and generally lots of people milling about. Smaller boutiques would be nice to stay in, but hard to find - again, book early. When I checked back, these rooms had doubled in price, as did all other rooms in NYC (we booked two months in advance). Also, everyone expects to get tipped in NYC (bellman, doorman, cab driver, washroom attendant, tour guide) - so have lots of small bills ready. As our last cab driver said, "In New York, everyone just wants your money." This hotel is great for getting to all the tour sites, shopping, and was excellent value for a NYC hotel.
