The Courtyard is a coverted bank building, so it does retain some of the bank charm with the reception desk very teller-esque. I stayed at the hotel on business for two nights.
I arrived around noon and there were no rooms ready. However, the front desk clerk asked if I had had lunch yet and when I said no, she began suggesting a few that were close to the hotel. I checked my bags and headed off for lunch at the Yard House.
The Courtyard is located in the Gaslamp District and you are within walking distance of an outdoor mall with lots of retailers. It's about 8 long blocks from the convention center ($10 taxi fare) and about 15 minutes from the airport ($15-20 taxi fare, depending on traffic).
The room I was given faced interior, so I had a view of the office building next door and the construction. At first I was concerned that the construction noise would be too loud, but it was quiet during my stay.
The bed was clean and comfortable and the work area a decent size. There were a sufficient number of outlets for my laptop, blackberry and iPod to be plugged in without having to move furniture. The bathroom was clean and larger than I expected.
The hotel offers room service (which I didn't order) and does offers breakfast and dinner in the main lobby/bar area. I had drinks and dinner at the bar and the bartender was engaging and efficient.
The bell staff was helpful. They have to be given that you have take a short flight of stairs down to the elevator. For those with early morning flights (mine was at 6 a.m.), be sure to book your cab the night before.
When I'm in San Diego again, I'll definitely consider this hotel.
