“Great location, but not perfect”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

I chose the Gaslamp Marriott for it's proximity to a training class I was taking. On a previous trip to SD, I stayed at the downtown Courtyard and was very impressed by the property and service. While this was an excellent stay, it did not clear the bar set by the Courtyard.

The hotel is adjacent to Petco Park (behind left field). After a delayed flight, I was arriving at the same time as a Padres game was starting. To my surprise, traffic was not terrible and the valet parking was a breeze (although for $30 a day, it should be). Check in was simple and easy.

I had a standard "city view" room with a great view of the ballpark. I wasn't high enough to see any game action, but I could see an exterior scoreboard to know the score. The rooftop bar offers a pretty good view of the outfield. My room was very nice and easily surpassed my expectations.

On my first morning, I ate at the Soleli@K restaurant. Their breakfast buffet was not worth $18, and I was told to order anything "custom" (eggs, waffles, etc) from my waiter. I did so, but it took 20 minutes to make a waffle, and my waiter did feel the need to check in. I ate the rest of my meals off site as there are lots of good places in the Gaslamp area.

The rooftop bar was very nice and it had a good mix of young professionals and "beautiful people". It was especially crowded during and after a game. There are cheaper places to get a drink in the Gaslamp area. I did not use the workout facility (also on the rooftop).

I did have some issues with the hotel: there is no free internet access in the rooms. Internet access is $10 per 24 hour block. There was free internet in the business center, but I did not want to lead a webinar from the business center, so I had to pay. When one-star motels regularly have free internet, I expect it from a Marriott.

When I checked in, I was instructed to call down for my car before I left my room instead of waiting at the valet station. The two times I did this, the message was not relayed from the person who answered the phone to the valet station, so I ended up waiting longer. The valet guys were very friendly and helpful. I never attempted to find my own parking, as the daily rates in the surrounding garages went up when the Padres were playing.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again, but I did feel nickel & dimed by my experiences with internet, parking, and the restaurant.

“Business Trip @ Convention Ctr”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

Jul 7, 2008

The hotel is located in the Gaslamp Square District downtown, just a few blocks from the Convention Center where my company was having meetings all week. Only about 3 blocks away-easy walking. Hotel is not your typical Marriott, was a former Clarion Hotel, which was turned into a Marriott about 5 yrs ago. So, the walls are a bit thin, and you can hear lould guests if it is crowded. The staff was very friendly and helpful, free business center with computers, printers, and Internet access.Has had the Marriott upgrade on bedding, which is great. Hall carpeting is a bit worn, but a great value if you need to stay near here for a business mtg.

Exercise room on rooftop was good!

No pool or whirlpool on property.

Only negative was housekeeping ,seems to do a very rushed job and beware of the drinking glasses. Mine were never cleaned properly (washed in a dishwasher), and it appears they were just wiped out. I had some extra time one day and observed one housekeeper clean serveral rooms close to mine. Never did I see her get clean glasses from her cart or take away the dirty ones. Use you own paper cup-I did and it was OK. Be careful of the coffee mugs, I filled mine with water and some film was visible on the water. (ugh).

I would stay here again if business required it, as it was considerable less expensive than nearby hotels

“Awesome Marriott”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

5 of 5 stars
Fort Lauderdale, Florida

I try to stay at Marriotts as often as I can on vacation for the simple fact that they are wonderful but this hotel far exceeded my expectations. I would have to say that this is probably the best Marriott experience I have had in quite a while.

Check-in was quick and all the employees are extremely friendly, but not a fake friendly, more of a sincere "thanks for staying with us" friendly. The room that we got was a HUGE room with a seperate sitting area. We must have gotten upgraded to a suite but it was awesome. Great view of the Petco stadium. Bed was comfortable and the bathroom was well appointed.

As I mentioned about the employees, I have never met more friendly and helpful Valet Attendants before in my life. One morning prior to leaving the hotel for a run, I asked where I could find a drug store at which time all 3 employees outside provided me with at least 8 different ones within my running path. Can't say enough about the friendly employees. The restaurant in the hotel was wonderful. A bit pricey but not bad at all. The gym was a typical hotel gym with several treadmills, free weights (low weights though), and a couple other machines.

The hotel, as many others have written, is at the base of the Gaslamp Quarter District. It is literally on the corner of the district and you only have to walk a couple blocks to get to the end of it so within these few blocks, you have wonderful restaurants and bars. The close proximity would please any age group whether you want to just have an early dinner or stay out and drink all night.

You are also directly across the street from Petco Stadium which is awesome. I recommend buying the $5.00 standing room only tickets as we did if you are going to a game. You can see the game from anywhere around the stadium and it lets you get a different aspect from the different spots. If you don't want to go to the game, you can watch it from the rooftop bar which was pretty cool. Rather expensive but a must see.

If I return to San Diego, I would only stay here and would tell anyone that is traveling to San Diego to stay here. Great for all age groups and only a couple minutes away from the highway and about 10 minutes away from the major tourist attractions. Well done Marriott!!!!

“Only missing element was a swimming pool”

For a romantice getaway weekend, we were looking for a warm location where we could relax. My wife loves to sit by the pool and read magazines. I looked up on TripAdvisor a few options in the gaslamp district because we were intending on only walking. We were not coming to see the sights. At first, we looked only at hotels with a pool. But found that many did not. Next, we looked at the other benefits. I loved the lobby pics of the Marriott, and then I saw the rooftop fireplace with couches. I suggested that we could also sit there and read magazines. She bought it. In fact, we did enjoy the rooftop lounge on our trip, both during the day and at night. Our room view was spectacular, facing the ocean and north towards downtown. The conceirge lounge on the top floor saved us many trips to oustide spots to grab snacks and drinks - we loved it! And the concierge helped us search out some great restaurants. She was very nice as well. This hotel definately fullfilled our expectations and we had a fantastic trip.

“Very Nice Hotel”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

The wife and I took our anniversary trip to San Diego. We chose this hotel because it was in the middle of everything and you know what you're going to get with Marriott. The hotel it self was beautiful and the staff very helpful and friendly.

The only thing I didn't like was this hotel did not have a pool. Of course we knew that going in, but I highly underestimated how relaxing a dip in the pool can be after walking around all day.

The hotel also has a very active night club and a first rate restaurant. If you're a budget traveler there's a subway located across the street that also serves breakfast.
