I should qualify my statements below by saying that my wife is a Starwood employee and we booked using their employee discount at $49 a night. One's expectations are much different for $49 with 50% off F&B as opposed to market rates and prices. However, I will try to remove this bias as much as possible in my comments.
The location of the Hotel is its greatest strength. It is literally one and half blocks (if you cut through the open air mall) from the Gas Lamp Quarter, which is littered with countless restaurants, pubs, and bars. Most of the restaurants offer outside dining on the Street, which is great for people watching (and there is good people watching because of the unusally high number of freaks, bums, homeless, etc. in San Diego, but that is another story). Being located next to the Horton Plaza shopping was also convenient especially for forgotten items and for cheap eats in the food court.
The hotel, itself, was nice but not as nice as some other Westin's that we have stayed. The design of the lobby was a bit odd, which may have lead to some of the comments about not being welcoming. With the exception of the consegieres who not particulary helpful, most of the staff were very friendly and accomadating. The valets and the bell boys were particularly freindly. The room was small, but clean and adequate for our 4 night stay. We are light sleepers so we left the A/C fan on all night and never heard a thing from the adjoining rooms. The water pressure in the shower was very good and they even had a dual shower head like most Westins which was awesome. I am also a big fan of the Heavenly bed and pillows.
The restaurants in the hotel are limited. There is one sports bar / restaurant, a Starbucks, and a out dated restaurant used only for breakfast. We had lunch in the sports bar and it was fine, but again with the Gas Lamp so close I would not advise it. They did have decent Happy Hour prices, but there were not many patrons trhoughout our visit (besides us because the Happy Hour prices were even better with 50% off).
The gym looked well equipped but we did not have time to use. Besides the hotel is so conveniently located that yuo could walk to most attractions for exercise ... the waterfront, the Aircraft Carrier, Seaport Village, the waterfront; the Convention Center, the Conseco Field Baseball Stadium, etc. were all easily within walking distance. The pool was small but clean. The water temperature was warm enough to use even after dark.
When not in use for a hotel event, the courtyard made for a nice retreat. One evening, my wife and I went to Horton Plaza, bought a bottle of wine and some food from the food court, and sat out and enjoyed the San Diego weather. We were the only ones using the approximaely 20,000 sq. ft. courtyard.
Overall, a more than adequate hotel, not the best Westin that I have stayed in, but the location made up for some of its short comings. If you are a first time visitor to the West Coast, I would recommend renting a car and driving up to La Jolla ... it was the favorite part of our trip.
