“Great location, mediocre rooms”

Sommerset Suites Hotel

We picked the Sommerset Suites because of its location, and that did not disappoint. It's very convenient to SeaWorld, Balboa Park, and the airport (it took us about 10 minutes to get to the airport early in the morning on the way out). Parking was fairly easy despite the fact that we had a minivan.

It's clear that this place used to be an apartment building. The 1 bedroom "suite" we had reminded me of the cruddy apartment I had in college. It was serviceable but not at all nice. Mold on the walls, bedroom door would not shut all the way. On the plus side it had a fully kitted out kitchen with utensils, etc. We had a nice balcony that overlooked the hospital next door, which provided a little show one evening for the kids as a medevac helicopter landed and later took off from the roof of the emergency room next door. Luckily it wasn't in the middle of the night.

The service was way above what you'd expect in a place like this. The front desk staff was very cheerful, the continental breakfast room staff was also friendly, but the real test was when our daughter had an accident in the bathtub during a bath and when we phoned to get cleaner to clean it up, we got a very quick response (although no offer to clean it up themselves which I wouldn't have expected :).

There are quite a few nice restaurants within walking distance in the Hillcrest area, just a few blocks away. I have to advise giving the "City Deli" a miss as I got horrible food poisoning probably from there (and the food was pretty mediocre too). In retrospect we should have gone to the Corvette Diner as I had originally planned.

The kids enjoyed the pool which got a little chilly due to the shade in the afternoon (it's in a courtyard in the middle of the building), and it was a little smelly too.

If you are looking for a 1 bedroom place near the zoo and Seaworld, the Sommerset Suites will fit the bill. Just don't expect the Ritz Carlton.

We spent a long weekend in San Diego Friday till Tuesday. Hotel is in a convenient location, in Hillcrest neighborhood. Parking available for 5 dollars a day . Rooms large with kitchen, but many great restaurants nearby. Staff friendly and helpful. Great pool and hot tub. Breakfast OK, with enough options to satisfy. Good value overall. We had a rental car but took the bus downtown because it was more convenient.

“Great place to stay in San Diego”

I loved this little hotel. It is easy to find, easy to park, in a nice area, and perfect for families. We had a one bedroom suite, with a queen sofa sleeper in the living room. The breakfast offered was nothing to write home about, but was better that the average "continental breakfast". There is a Whole Foods not too far away, and the kitchen allows you to make your own breakfast (or dinner, for that matter). The so called "pool" is more like a big tub, perhaps 20 by 12 feet, but it's clean and nice to relax in after a long day at the zoo or Sea World. There is also a spa.
I could use the computer in the lobby free of charge to check my e-mails, and do a "mid-trip" laundry in the coin operated laundry in the top floor. I would certainly stay here again.

“Great mid price hotel,”

Sommerset Suites Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Las Vegas, NV

This was our second visit to the Sommerset Suites. For the price, you can't ask for more. The room was clean and more than adequate for our needs, a king size bedroom, livingroom and kitchen. The free coffee maker/coffee and full size refrigerator were much appreciated, as was the free internet and free parking as the next California property we stayed at charged $10 per day for internet and $14 per day for parking.
The location was great for area attractions. The front desk clerk, Bridget, was friendly and very efficient as was the lady who managed the free breakfast area. The free breakfast was more than just donuts and coffee, you had a choice of assorted muffins breads, bagels, even fresh made waffles, fruits, cereal, yogurts and juices. The only set back was the tiny parking spaces and I have a small sedan, I can only imagine the difficulty in parking a mini-van or SUV there. Otherwise, for the price, I think it's one of San Diego's best deals.

“Great Staff & Location, Some inconveniences”

Sommerset Suites Hotel

4 of 5 stars
San Francisco, California
May 5, 2008

Excellent location, especially for Scripps Hospital (next door). Neighborhood is lively and gay, lots of restaurants & shops. Hotel staff was nice & fun, but professional. We checked into our room, but the maid was still cleaning it, so they switched us. The non-smoking room smelled of smoke. The internet didn't work, and we spent a lot of time (with no compensation) on the phone with tech support or calling the front desk. What a pain! But the rooms are nice, clean, functional -- and the breakfast was good. Overall, I'd recommend it and will probably go back. Try to get a room overlooking the pool, as other rooms have boring views.
