“Great location, noisy outside on weekends”

Gaslamp Plaza Suites

3 of 5 stars
Boston, Massachusetts
Apr 25, 2008

I was in town for a meeting and stayed at Gaslamp Plaza Suites for 5 nights. The hotel is neat--I actually liked the frosted glass hallways. My room was a good size and the bathroom was art-deco-ey. The hotel is in a great spot for enjoying the Gas Lamp district and close to the bus stop to get out to Balboa Park and the Zoo. The rooftop deck was nice, and there was breakfast up there (nothing to brag about). My issues with the hotel were the just average quality of the linens (for $279/nt I expect nicer sheets and towels)--not a lot better than a motel 6 in that department. The soaps and such were also pretty cheap (again for the price I paid, I expected more). I had a room on the 8th floor that faced the bars and on Sat. night in particular, it was loud, but I turned on the a/c and that helped to drown out the noise. The rest of the nights the noise was reasonable.

    • Liked — Not your cookie cutter rooms so there was character and in the middle of the action
    • Disliked — Linens/toiletries weren't in line with the prices, loud on weekends

“Nice Location, Clean Rooms, but Noisy...”

Gaslamp Plaza Suites

4 of 5 stars
Campbell, California
Apr 1, 2008

We had two rooms booked for my mom, my kids and myself over spring break. The suites were good size and clean, although a little on the sad side. Some renovation would make this hotel brilliant! My mom's room was on the quiet side of the building, but window facing another building and constant noise from a fan. Our two room suite had windows all around which made it really bright and nice. The pull-out sofa was really uncomfortable, probably very old. The main problem was the noise we got in the evening from the nearby tavern. Every night past midnight. So, if you are planning to have an early night - bring your ear plugs! The service was great and staff really friendly. The valet was courteous and fast, although 24 dollars/24 hours sounded like too much. Overall, would stay again, if no kids at all and plan to visit local restaurants and bars, which are numerous.

“Lock up your valuables!!!”

I have just returned from a week at the Gaslamp Plaza and felt I needed to share this information with others who may be considering this location.
It is in a great location, however if you are not a sound sleeper, it is very loud at night. Because of the downtown location, there are people wandering throughout the hotel and there is no security to prevent someone from entering. From 11 pm - 7 am the doors are locked, but any other time, anyone can enter.
We had items stolen from our room while we were out for supper one evening. So make sure you take your valuables with you!!!! Then the most disappointing part about this is that the hotel would take no responsibilty for it. I had spoke to another couple who had items stolen from their room the previous week.
The items can be replaced, but it was a terrible feeling to know someone had entered our room.
This hotel is also very old and the rooms are very small.

“Mixed Reviews”

Well, I don't know where to start. First off, the hotel is beautiful and in a great location. However, my first two nights were spent in a studio which was ONE tiny room. The glass door (with some type of clouded glass and curtain) was right in front of my bed. I was scared. I was traveling alone on business, and I opened the closet door to hide half of the glass door, stacked my suitcase next to that, and then piled pillow on top of pillow to prevent anyone from peeking in. Now, I really don't think that anyone could have peeked in, but I was paranoid. Plus there was a window, but again, it had this weird glass and there was nothing but an alley with no light/ceiling whatsoever.

The rooftop was incredible. I went up there every morning for the continental breakfast. They also finally, after two nights, moved me up to a larger studio on the 8th floor (albeit I did have to pay more).

The staff was very nice. I did wonder about the security, especially since I went to the lower lobby one night to get a soda...and couldn't figure out what/who/what/why the club room doors were for.

The whole gaslamp area is beautiful, but it is full of homeless people. They really don't bother you, but again, being alone on business, I was sort of scared.

All in all, it is a beautiful hotel, although DO NOT GET A Studio on 204, 304, 504, 404 or 604. Other than that, I'm sure it is great. My new studio was actually two rooms with lots of mirros which were great to control my claustrophobia.

“nice hotel, but was noisy”

Gaslamp Plaza Suites

stayed one night (although booked for four), and left due to noise from street.

Although had requested higher floor at time of booking in August 2007 to avoid noise, was given room on 2nd floor. At check-in asked again for higher floor, but none available.

After one noisy night (music from local club from 8 pm to 12:30 am on Thursday night, and flags whipping against building) again asked for higher floor but again none available, so went to other nearby hotel and slept fine for rest of stay.

Other than noise, room was fine, well-appointed with mini-fridge, microwave, plates, bowls, cups, glasses, cutlery. Staff were friendly. The free continental breakfast was basic, but quantity good.

(Wished we could have stayed on a higher floor; it might have been quieter?)
