This hotel REALLY , REALLY depends on what you are looking for as a traveler to Boston. Here is the good:
1) Centrally loacted to everything within walking distance (Freedom Trail, etc). This hotel is the heart of the city. Unless you are going somewhere really outside of the city, you will not need a taxi. Gotta love a hotel with a good location!
2) Friendly service everywhere. Fast check-ins, fast valet, great conceriege, great servers, etc.
3) The inside is historically beautiful. Very pretty old, dark wood. Charming. But old. Yes...old. Did i mention old?
4) The Parker Bar, restaurant and Last Hoorah bar (all located in the hotel) are great and upscale. This is an unscale hotel. No teenagers or little kids. We saw two weddings in the hotel. This is a good wedding location. JFK proposed to Jackie O in this hotel. That says alot about the charm huh?
5) Housecleaning service is outstanding. Best i have seen in a long time and i travel ALOT.
6) Room service was outstanding (fast, good, reasonable).
7) Good gym in the hotel and a Starbucks. Yes, in the hotel.
8) Bed is comfortable. Not the best that i have seen, but not the worst. I slept fine. No complaints.
9) Lots of nice extras, like good shampoo, lotion, starch, etc. These are replinshed each day by housekeeping.
Here is the bad.
1) This is the oldest working hotel in the U.S. That means a few things. The rooms are smaller than hotels that we are used to. The t.v. is a tiny little t.v., not the huge ones that we are used to in modern hotels.
2) The bathroom is very tiny and my husband and i could not be in there at the same time (i weigh 100 pounds and 5'2). This would not be a problem if there was a cheap mirror somewhere in the room, but there was not. I wish the Omni Parker would spring for a cheap full length mirror that could be in the closet or somewhere!! It was very hard getting ready each day and not looking in a mirror. Omni- buy a plastic full length mirror. Us ladies need to look at our outfits before we go out!
3) The rooms do not have safes. We like to have safes.
4) You are in the heart of a big city. This hotel is noisy. You hear cars, people, whistles, etc 24 hours per day. If you want peace and quiet, this is NOT the hotel for you.
5) I thought the towels were a bit rough and could be nicer for this expensive of a hotel.
6) Within 1 hour of arrival, our main light bulb burnt out. No problem. We called down to the front to get someone to fix it. 2 days later, no one has come. My husband changed the bulb himself with one in the bathroom.
7) Again, this is an old hotel. Small bathtub that you cant use. And so tingy that you would not anyways.
8) Hard (even) for hotel staff to get me a taxi. I waited for quite awhile for hotel staff to hail a cab.
9) This hotel is underoing remodeling on the outside only. The WHOLE hotel is enclosed in scaffolding. You cannot open your window or a construction worker will be looking at you. Literally. My husband was caught off guard naked. Yes, they work Mon-Fri from 8-5. Very noisy, my fellow trip advisor friends. Ask when the remodel is complete before booking your stay.
I do not know if i would stay here again. I loved the location dearly. So close to everything. But i am getting a bit spoiled for my need to have a big room and modern amenities. I hope that helps all. This hotel is not cheap either. We paid for a room with two beds from Thu-Mon and it was roughly 380.00(or more on the weekend) per night. We stayed in room 416.
Ask yourself: Location or Modern Amenities? Then you have your answer.
Boston Tips:
* Do not miss the North End. Get a map. Look for it. It is not to be missed.
* Can be difficult to get a taxi on the weekend. Give yourself a bit of time if you need to hail one.
* Bring walking shoes. This is a walking city.
*Subway felt a bit unsafe. Take a taxi if you are alone.
*Do not miss Salem. Worth the 30 minute drive. Wonderful town at Halloween time. Great for kids. A huge carnival. Have your kids (or yourself) dressed in Halloween attire. Everyone else!
