We visited Caliterra during 2008 Restaurant Week based on the appeal of the printed menu. Unfortunately, the food and service were extremely disappointing. We should have taken a cue from their poor wine list ($38 for a bottle of Korbel...give me a break), but we decided to forge ahead. Our appetizers were Prince Edward Island mussels simmered in a white wine saffron broth with shallots, garlic and fresh tomato served with grilled Focaccia and grilled shrimp set on roasted tomatillo and poblano chile pepper salsa with lime-sage vinaigrette (sounds good, right?!?). This was perhaps the most tolerable course. The mussels were bland and the sauce on the shrimp was clumsily plated. The main courses were Pan-seared sea scallops with blood orange sauce, minted jasmine rice and snow peas in a bibb lettuce cup and Sautéed Statler chicken breast with grilled corn, thyme and Asiago polenta with a stone ground mustard cream sauce and sautéed kale. Again, sounds great and ambitious, which gave us high hopes. Unfortunately, the food here disappointed in every way. The scallops were clearly previously frozen and tasted gritty. The blood orange "sauce" was a sloppy garnish. The rice was tasty, but I didn't order this for rice. The chicken was well-cooked, but the accompaniments were lousy. The "sauteed kale" was described as "ornamental kale" on the printed menu but looked wilted and were swamped in some creamy concoction. The polenta was dry, old and overcooked. After this disappointing course, the server took more than 20 minutes to clear our plates. We waited about 10 minutes for the dessert course and were about to leave the restaurant when the server finally announced that they were "on their way". Our dessert choices were Meyer lemon crème Brulee and the "Chocolate Trilogy". Horrid in all regards, not worth the wait at all. The Brulee was putrid - lumpy and extremely eggy. It was also warm all the way through, which is NOT proper for crème brulee. The Chocolate Trilogy was a single lump of 3 different colored chocolate mousses that all tasted the same. On top of this, it was topped with - I kid you not - Hershey's Syrup. Considering the normal price of their lunch menu (entrees *starting* at $22, the crème brulee priced at $9), we were lucky to dine here during restaurant week, where we were only outted $20.08 each. This restaurant needs serious help. Take the T to the South End, North End or Newbury area (or the nearest Dunkin Donuts, for that matter) for much better eating.
